I have to say 1994 but I'm biased like many. I bought a Cinder Cone that year and still have it. My first 'good' mountain bike.

97 by far!! best looking paint jobs and I love the jungle graphics!

matte bikes always look better than gloss bikes

1998 Explosif for me.

Reasons:

Front suspension correct.
4.2lbs for an 18 inch.
Getting rare now.
Cool jungle graphics.
Made of good old reliable Reynolds 853 (as used on the HOT as well), thus don't crack like some of the earlier models and can easily be repaired if needed.

...but best of all is the ride a KONA 853 frame gives - WOW!!!

Had a '91 Fire Mountain, tried a '92 Cindercone.

Now have a '94 Explosif, '98 Kilauea (had since new) & a '95 AA.

Which year is best...?

Not a clue.
