Pimp my kona - 96 Explosif...newbie post

Hello all...great site!

I am the very proud ( new) owner of a gorgeous 96 Kona explosif the olive green one. I have ridden a 17 " 96 Kilauea from new, the exploisf is a 19 and I therefore need to reduce the reach.

I want to shorten the stem and also fit some pace rc 36 forks.

Im told that the bike will have a threaded stearer....is this going to cause major problems with me finding forks and stem to fit?

If you're changing the stem & fork then you can go to a threadless set up. You'll just need a new headset to match.

It'll make finding forks and stem to fit much easier.

Won't be a problem at all.

In fact, if you look in the FS page there's some RC36 forks for sale right now in 1 1/8th with a threaded steerer.

Again, there's lots of 1 1/8th quill stems around too.

Have a hunt through the classifieds or post a wanted ad and you'll soon be swamped with offers!

If you've had a 96 Kilauea from new, I'm not clear why the threaded steerer on the Explosif need cause you any concern. It would certainly make it easier to find a suspension fork if you go to ahead, but converting is a doddle anyway.

You will have a 13cm head tube on the Explosif, so you need a fork with either a threaded steerer of at least 162mm or an ahead steerer of at least 205mm. If you fit a RC36, I would suggest getting one with 70mm travel not 90, as the RC36 is quite a long fork anyway and in 90mm form I think it is too long for the Explosif's geometry. Although there'll no doubt be somebody along in a minute who completely disagrees!
