Pete Matthews interview

Blimey...he's still going.:D
I had a pair of mountainbike wheels rebuilt by him back in 1987, when I was at University in Liverpool...still straight now :)

All the best,

Not seen Pete for a few years and am also surprised he's still 'at it' (wheel building that is!). To me, building wheels is a Black Art, practiced by mature men in the privacy of their sheds, workshops and back rooms of old bike shops!

I rode against Pete in the 60's in local events on Merseyside and North Wales. Generally only evening 'crits' as I wasn't really good enough to get into the 'big' events for 1st and 2nd category riders at weekends. Always took a pasting from either his Liverpool Mercury team mates or their great rivals Kirkby CC - as did most of the field!

I found the accompanying photos and film clips very nostalgic as they featured other Merseyside riders I used to know - mainly from seeing their back wheels disappear up the road! In the summer a lot of them stopped work and started 'working for the Queen' as they described being on the dole. Not a thing you could easily get away with these days I suppose.

For your information, I told andy at bikeit all about pete as id had a few bikes off him and thought his story needs to be told before it could be too late. couple of months later andy informed me of his pending latest video on Pete. (great site btw and watched them all) Neil P widnes.
