The original RC30/35 crowns were made with steerer socket sizes to suit the steerers.
They were produced with:
1”
1 1/8”
1 1/4”
Indeed, as Danson points out, the 1” easily spotted with its flat face. The 1 1/8” and 1 1/4” had the bulge in the face, the 1 1/4” was obviously larger/wider. The crowns had a well on top into which the lower flange of the crown race collar would fit. On later crowns this was omitted. Reducer shims then introduced could allow smaller steerers to be fitted in the two larger size crowns
Later, notably in conjunction with the release of the 1995 RC35 MXC/D fork with its 1 1/4” steerer socket as standard, reducer shims were required to allow fitment of the two smaller steerer sizes in the crown.
In 1997 with the release of the RC36 all crowns went to 1 1/8” steerer socket, a reducer shim still allowed 1” steerers to be fitted, but that was the end for 1 1/4”
