Ottadini Reynolds 531

Dirt Disciple
First post on here but I've loved looking through everyone else builds and it's certianly been an inspiration to build a bike myself.

I found this Ottadini frame on eaby with wheels for £110. The frame is in pretty good condition considering it's not been used for 14 years! I personally love the old steel frames with chrome rear ends and I'm a big fan of blue.

The wheels on the bike are Shimano 600 hubs with Wolber Profil 20 tubular rims. The tyres are Vittoria Rally which look fine rubber wise but they don't seem to be stuck to the rim well. I can't work out whether the rear hub is a 7 or 8 speed freehub. My intention is to run 9 speed as I want to actually ride this fairly regularly and want parts that are fairly easy to get hold of.

Some of the chrome could do with a polish and the forks look like they could do with being re-chromed. Given its age I'm impressed with how it looks. The Campag headset looks in good condition but feels a little notched when turning so I will give that a good clean out and re-grease.

Couple of bits moving forwards - I don't know whether the seat post I need is 27.2mm or narrower. I don't have anything decent to measure with other than a tape measure so if anyone knows that would be really appreciated.
I'm intending on using these wheels lng term but not sure whether I need a new freehub body. I do have some spare 700C wheels I can sue to set the bike up and swap over to once I get going with it.

In terms of what I'm going to run I have some Dura Ace downtube shifters coming soon that will work with 9 speed. I'm also swapping the stem to a chrome Nitto alongside chrome bars. I do feel a chrome seatpost would be best but I'm going to initially use what I've got if I can. I'm putting on a Regal saddle.
I've also bought some deep drop calipers as the gap looked huge on the pictures I originally saw but now seeing the frame I'm thinking normal drop calipers will fit. Would people suggest normal shallow drop calipers over deep drop? I know I could get deep drop ones to work either way but I prefer the look of smaller calipers if possible.

I'll update this as I go along. Hopefully it will be up to standard as it's my first retro build!

Here's the 531 Pro page from the 1985 Reynolds' catalogue:

The seat post is supposed to be 27.2 if it's imperial tubing (28.6 external dimension) or 26.6 if metric. My 2 531 Pro bikes are both metric and they both take 26.4 seat posts.

Good luck

Thank you for that. I hadn’t noticed it was 531 Professional. I’ll try a 27.2 post I’ve got and give it a measure. I’m feeling I may need a 26.4 seatpost.

Re:

It looks like there is a small crack in the right hand seat stay.
Is this a relatively easy repair for someone with the right skills? Doesn’t look too bad and the frame feels pretty sturdy still.

Re:

I’ll look into those tyres.
Unfortunately, I may lose the chroming. The tubes are pretty thin and I don’t think I can afford to get it re-chromed.

Re:

Slight update -
Still waiting to get it painted. If I’m not re-chroming I want to pick a colour scheme I’m happy with. Heading across to Croma Works in sheffield to see what’s possible.

In the picture is a very quick throw together to see what it will look like. I have got Dura Ace frame shifters but my puppy was going a bit crazy so didn’t get chance to throw them on.
I really like the Deda stem as it has a cap rather than being threaded. The levers aren’t age appropriate but they’re decent quality and comfortable. Plus I already had them laying around.
The rear mech is Dura Ace 7400. I do have a matching front mech but the threads seem to be shot on it. The brakes are old 105 callipers. I’ve gone for the regal saddle and will look to get a chrome post at some point. Again, I had it laying around and it saved some cash.

Weren't Ottadini frames made in the North East? I'm sure I've got some adverts in old Cycling mags for them.

They were! Apparently the guy was in the SAS so only made small batches for the local community. If you have a picture of the advert I'd love to see it.

From Sunderland or Gateshead I think, can't remember which. The Ottadini were a tribe of pre-Roman Britions in that sort of area.
