Orange Clockwork resto

I'm in Jersey too, I'll have to keep an eye out for you when it finished.

As for the resto, keep it period (1992 according to the catalogue) or close there after. I'm currently working on a 1993 Giant Cadex CFM3 so I'm trying to stick to 93/94.

lensmansteve, it's a strange one, probably because Orange liked to experiment with the decals. It's been mentioned on this forum, and the evidence is with Cheshire1980 in his thread viewtopic.php?f=6&t=355658. So on with the experimental ethic of Orange, and i'll think i'll do a combination of Commanderrb's spaced out decals and Gil's tightly bunched set.

Hi Malt, hopefully soon! Going to look at a set of Mavic/shimano wheels this evening. I put a shout out on the Jersey C.I. Bicycle Forum on Facebook.

Jersey being the size it is - do you need a forum, surely you just nip down the road and pop in !

I’m with Lensman the widely spaced letters look a little awkward even if they were once a factory option,

I saw your post on there, mentioned the bike doctor. I'm on the lookout for some Mavic 230/231 rim to go on the '94 XT parallax hubs I accidentally won on eBay his morning. I'll keep an eye out and let you know if I find anything that might be good for you.

Re:

Both sets of decals are correct. The standard decals from 89-91 were the version Gil has but the wider spacing with larger font did also pop up although usually in orange and on the early Prestige. The style changed to the version seen on your bike in 92 (and is my favourite). Gil also has the 92 style.

Thanks malt, but I've just picked up a wheel set of Shimano LX hubs and Mavic rims for £30, all in excellent nick. And I'm in discussion with someone in Guernsey about buying a 1990s Orange Clockwork, blue and silver fade with orange decals which I'll convert to solid orange with black decals.

My frame was new old stock direct from Orange, they literally found it in a pile of boxed stuff that hadnt been looked at for 30 years. I had a really interesting chat with them and they felt it was one of their very earliest frames and as the slightly ropey paint finish confirms, it was most likely a proto and not origionally intended to be sold. This probably explains the decals.
I had never seen decals like it either but given its direct from them Im not going to over worry it....its both origional and "origional" as a possible one off so perfect for my collection.
I bought a set like Gil shows (from Gil) for the yellow fade I have which I bought from orange at the same time (a few of the decals had peeled) which is the same sort of year, they are great quality and identical to what were on it so I would suggest Gils are correct and my orange one was possibly a one off.
Long story but I was lucky enough to visit where they assembled the bikes in about 1994 when they moved warehouses in Halifax .... I remember they had loads of frames hung up from the last few years including a lovely Formula which had been in one of the magazines for a test years earlier. I was picking up a replacement frame after bending a clockwork and they asked me what decals I wanted in case I wanted to try to match my damaged frame ...they seemed to have quite a few options but Ive no idea now what they all were. From photos I have of me riding I obviously went for something like the ones Gil is showing.
The 94 trip I will never forget as looking round the place was amazing, my frame was literally just out the paint oven and they told me to wait a few days before putting the decals on.....plus I seemed to buy a P7 frame too (black with nlock orange decals) whilst I was there which I struggled to explain when I got home.

Re:

Yeah, you used to be able to buy old decals direct from Orange. I remember that from when I did work experience at Airevalley Cycles in Keighley, working alongside Chris Akrigg.

The orange bike is early but not a one off. Seen a few in that colour and with those decals come up over the years, one not so long ago.

Well brock, that sorts it then. Thanks for clearing it up. However, I'm not too sure if I like the spaced out "Orange" on the down tube, as it doesn't match the rest of "Orange" logos on the bike. But I do like the spaced out Clockwork on the top tube. I've asked Gil if it's possible to do a set of decals with both versions of the "Orange" for the down tube, one set spaced out and the other normal, whilst I try and make my mind up.

In the mean time, back to the matter in hand, the 1992 Clockwork. Got busy on Sunday and stripped it down and gave it a clean in the bath, ready for decal removal, sanding, painting etc.

A nice bit of original orange on the forks for colour matching. The embossed numbers are "A-PRC 92", with "CR-MO" underneath

After I'd washed off all the crud, it was posible to see the wear, tear and solarisation on the tubes which revealed the original paint process; light grey primer and orange throughout, with the white applied later.

I've made a note of the positioning of the decals before I begin removing them. Thought I'd share the info for future reference.

I'll be getting the heat gun out soon, and peeling off the old decals.
And once the bottom bracket tool arrives, that I've just had to buy off eBay because I can't find mine anywhere, I'll be removing the bottom bracket. It feels a bit dry when spun by hand, so hopefully will just need a clean out and some fresh grease.

Now that it's stripped down, I've made a list of parts I need. Any ideas of what/where's best, please let me know:
Shimano LX pedals
Shimano chain stay guard
Headset bearings
Cables (all of them)

Cheers,
fred
