old decal glue-how to remove

Acetone...

Go to the chemists and buy a small bottle, use in a well ventilated room, or outside but this is the main base for all the clear materials, just the neat version

Always try a little on an unseen area first ;)

Turps, white spirit, petrol, any solvent of that ilk works a treat

.. no it won't !
My Zaskar frame has resisted white spirit, acetone, meths, sticker remover, petrol, soapy water......

I am almost at the point of putting the new decals over the top !

That's the beauty of the decal eraser wheel. It's a mechanical removal system that won't damage the paint (just don't go too high RPM due to heat build-up). Has been used in Automotive applications for many years. The problem is, some of the more aggressive chemicals might attack the paint (whilst doing nothing to the decal foil, they just remove the dye). I was stripping a Kona frame with Aircraft grade paint stripper (pretty much the most corrosive chemical for this kind of stuff) and the paint stripper went to town on the paint, however the decals remained untouched (it just removed the dye in them but the transparent film was untouched). I had to go in with a decal eraser to remove the decals before continuing. Some decals just won't come off chemically...

Re:

I wouldn't use nail varnish remover on painted frames, it can eat through the lacquer.
I usually use petrol on an old rag.
