No longer an ‘88 Klein pinnacle build

What should I do with the 88 Pinnacle

  • Upgrade it to XTR 950 with spoked wheels

  • Trick it out in blue anodizing w/period correct group

  • Go back to what it was when it rolled off the showroom

Ok guys, I need your opinions. Just picked this up and there are 3 options. Keep it a mosh of anything and everything isn’t an actual option so that doesn’t count. Upgrade it to xtr 950, upgrade it with the goodies period correct, or bring it back to stock.

What colour is it? Any pics of the frame?

I think early Pinnacles don´t wear ano or modern gear very well. Stock (-ish) build gets my vote!

Here’s some photos

What are your plans? Do you intend to ride it? If so then you should do whatever works best for you. The frame looks to be in fantastic condition, if that's the original paint then I'd urge you to get it back to catalogue spec, although good luck finding the 1988 catalogue.

^^
Judging by that article it looks like 1988 was a U-brake year, how sure are you that yours is an 88?

Originally my plan was light riding with the family, nothing that could damage it. The paint is original and in really good shape. My first thought was it needs to be stock. Thank you for the clipping, doesn’t appear to be a difficult resto build.
Wow the frame looks pristine! Even the bottelcage bolts are still there.
It’s damn near that. I’d say 9/10. Bought it from the original owner. He’s got a pulse II also in the same shape. I wasn’t planning on another project but I think I have one!

Yep, I'm a big fan of this frame having just completed a Pinnacle restoration. Paint & decals are in really great shape. Wonder if you could flip the wheels to help fund a more stock build?

Looks like a 90 or 91 with rear canties compared to the 89' under chainstay U brake variant.

A donor bike with DX or XT of the day would be ideal if you want to go period correct.

MC1s are hard to come by and spendy, my preference would be a period correct 1" quill

An non suspension corrected rigid fork would suit best IMHO. I was lucky to find a nice Spinner for cheap.

I have to say my 91' Pinnacle is an amazing bike to ride and a correct length fork and stem play a big part in that.

Looking forward to seeing the direction you go with this whatever you decide 👍
