Record 10 speed in my opinion. Doesn’t get better. After that the chains got too thin and the small gaps go out of adjustment too easily.

I've not used Campagnolo but I found my Nirvana with Shimano and SRAM 10-speed. It just seemed to offer the best combination of cross-compatibility of parts (both Road to MTB and Shimano to SRAM) and backwards compatibility (freehub width, rear wheel OLN spacing, rear derailleurs and shifters) while still packing in a well-spaced set of gears on the cassette. Plus you can get downtube shifters which is handy for hiding 10 gears on bikes like we have on here.
