Newbie 1991 GT Tequesta Build - help!

Hi,

I'm finally get round to sorting out the 1991 GT Tequesta that I picked up from this very forum last year - but its my first retro build (and first build!) that I've done and I've got a bit stuck.

Any advice on the following would be amazing!

It needs a new bottom bracket - it didn't come with one. Any idea what size I need? There seem to be loads? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shim ... -prod71369

I can't shift the allen key bolts that are holding the brakes on (front and rear U brake) - other than brute force is there anything I can do to loosen them?

Cheers!

Re:

Ok so, you'll need an English thread for starters. Measure the width of the bottom bracket shell on the frame, probably 68mm. The axle length depends largely on what chainset you'll be using. Sheldon Brown has a crib sheet which covers quite a number of chainset options http://www.sheldonbrown.com/bbsize.html

Re the stuck bolts, I would try a little penetrating oil as a first option.

Good luck :)

Thank you! Thats super helpful - I now understand how to measure a bottom bracket :)

Its a 68mm. Just need to figure out how long I need the spindles for a 91 Suntour XCE triple now!

Did you sort out spindle length? I’m about to make the same replacement and I’m trapped looking at what feels like infinite options.

I have the same quest!
Literally a 91 Tequesta, I haven't started it yet though because it came with all the wrong parts and I don't have the right ones yet.
Show us some photos! 😁

bringing a thread back from the dead, I see '91 tequesta is suppose to have SR/Suntour/Sugino groups instead of Shimano, but all of my drivetrain has been swapped to Shimano (both RD, both shifters, and crank). That means the bike was modified, correct? TIA.

Unless there was a version for a different market then yes, the UK version was Suntour, you can see the specs towards the end of the catalogue here - https://www.retrobike.co.uk/archive/1991-gt-bicycles-usa-catalog.19/

Mine came with Shimano as well, and horrible aero wheels. I now have 95% of the "correct" parts to put on it, but I haven't put it together yet... 3 years later. I really should do that... nights are getting dark now though... maybe in the spring 😂

thanks for that. I double checked the '92 catalog and can confirm mine is a '92 (USA bike) in the "alternate" colorway. in '92, Tequesa switched away from suntour/sr and went to the Shimano camp: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/oyn7...talog+13.jpeg&rlkey=7i32v6urzfui0n2xzwgnfll21

Let's finish the build @hellodave ! It's only been a week and I already got a new (un-rusty alumi) bar and the correct sized 26.4mm seatpost into the frame, instead of the horrible hammered in 26.8mm seat post:
