New (Old) Specialized Hardrock Sport

Seant43

Retro Newbie
Finally after a while and other commitments I saved this from the scrap yard. Found at a recycling tip near me in amongst other things I was able to get this home for free! Wanted a rockhopper but this will do nicely. The wheels are pretty true, brakes work very well and all the gear changes are still smooth! Going to give it a good clean and once over and possibly put more road friendly tires on to it. Needs new grips too but minor things. Does anyone possibly know the year for this bike had a nosey online and can’t seem to se ethos colour with stickers combo. I'm guessing mid 90’s ish?

Cheers

Sean

If I was a guessing man (I am now) I'd say 92. The boffins on here will be able to decode the serial number & tell you it's production date & more likely a browse at the Specialized catalogues will tell you the model year it was on sale. Often bikes are made late in the year for the following catalogue year ie Oct 92 build for 1993 showrooms.

I think that it's a 1993 model. The 1993 Specialized catalogue in the archive here is in German but under Hardrock Sport a 'tiefrot' (deep red) colour is listed.

Hardrock fan here, I have 3 in the garage in various setups. They're not really all that special, they just do what they're supposed to without complaints. Specialized serials are an indecipherable mystery for the ages. Someone else can try to crack that code. Shimano products have a date code stamped on them, usually on the back. Can be used to narrow down the era of construction
