My £29 CR-7

Yes really None of the original kit is left, but underneath all the c**p is a 1990 CR-7. I've just done a quick 150 mile round trip to collect it...

I had a 1989 CR-7 BITD, I loved that bike, but it got stolen in 1993 and I've long wanted another. They really don't turn up very often these days. Not quite rare enough to be a unicorn, maybe, part of my personal history, definitely. So a scratch to be itched, so to speak. This one's not even my size. I'll pretend it's a present for my wife

Plan - see if I can rebuild it to the same spec as my old one. That was XT, early Manitous, A-TAC. Shouldn't be too hard ??

That's lovely, same colour as my original one but with earlier graphics - yours must be an early 1989 and mine was late ? Here's an old pic of mine. I do wonder if it's still out there somewhere.

Stripped down the “new” one and apart from a lot of surface rust on the rear triangle it seems sound and came apart very cleanly. Even the BB didn’t put up a fight.

Press fit -> no stripped threads, nice! But quite puzzled as how the rear triangle is attached on the BB? Last I know is you can´t weld alu to steel?!

It simply bolts on.

The hex sockets you can see there are just plugs, which allow access to the bolts that screw into the end of the chainstays. Seatstays are a simple bolt into the top tube.

Yeah hard to miss seat stays (as in similar models from Haro and Mantis). Never had a look at the BB area though, thanks for the pics!

I'll do more, I'm sure Press-fit is obviously a bad idea for things that need to be changed regularly but here they work great. Brand new decent quality bearings (6003-RS2) from FAG / SKF are about £3 each. So effectively a brand new BB for £6 !

Next update... just like the rest of you I'm sure, I'm a total nightmare / ebay fiend / hoarder / whatever adjective my wife comes up with today. My garage is full of junk that "might be useful one day" BUT it pays off sometimes. I was troubled by the wrong forks on here, the lack of a correct 1 1/4" headset (it's shimmed down to 1 1/8") and also but less so the wrong seat collar. Small point. This evening I remembered that I'm an idiot and I have an AL-1 frameset in the garage. Bought dead cheap because it had been powdercoated pink and then badly listed on ebay. Checking my emails it was Mar 2017, and it was £12 It turns out it has exactly the right forks, and a 1 1/4" headset, and a seat collar ! WIN. OK, so the forks are pink, but that can be fixed. So I think I probably have enough to get the bike rolling and more or less period-correct from the parts bin.
