FWIW, my thoughts Al.

I knew it would be a hard slog, wet or dry. We both entered as solo riders, so no-one else to blame.
I rode it last year too, bone dry then, flying around. Part of my undoing that year
Panaracer Fire XC Pro 1.8 on the front of my Dyna Tech, was fine but for one off, on THAT descent. The mud tyre on the back flatted though
We had to be sensible, get off and walk where it was wise to. Some folk were riding up barely any faster.
On my alloy hardtail for what was to be my final lap, the aforementioned tyres were fine on that too. Pressures is the key my friend.
Was feeling a bit worn out by this stage, so decided on trying to rest and also socialize a bit more. Ready for the Sunday.
As it turned out, I got no sleep thanks to a generator going, noisy girls, and some tit hammering something. Resigning myself to getting up, back was really sore, I decided to pack up and fcuk off.

I may actually sleep in the car next year, got to be quieter, don't you think? Certainly more spacious!

Wasn't an easy decision though, given that there were solo female riders either side of my pencil case tent, that were still going.
Felt ( and to some extent still do ) like I'd let myself down, embarrassed and a bit lost.

I really wasn't looking forward to riding my bike, that's never happened before. Had I had someone to boost me, tell me to get my act together, sort my sh-t out, I may well have gone out on the 29er to see how I felt. But as it was, on my own, at around 5am, there was no-one to give me a kick up the proverbial, ( Where were you Andy?! ) which may have been all I needed to finish the event.

Learnt my lesson. Tail between my legs

Going back for more next year though! This time IN A TEAM!

Mike

First off, I should have included you in the review. It was nice to shout out 'hey Mike', I think on lap 3 or 4; you were taking a breather at your base camp. I'm pretty sure I saw you out on course too: great riding style, proper mean business vibes!

Sorry to hear you had a similar experience. Yeah, I knew the risks - as did you - it's just a shame the risk didn't pay off. That's a fair point on the pressures and I did lower them about half way through. Plus if I wasn't riding 1 of only 2 97 Caldera's in the UK then I might have taken a few more risks

So glad I packed the ear-plugs mind ;-)

Re:

Didn't know who it was tbh, but I said hi anyway I think! I'm like that, say hello to anyone! If you'd had your finger up to your face, I might have cottoned on. Like in your avatar.
But then, I would have had to look like Paola Pezzo by the same token!
Team of four next year,

Sleeping in the car. In Minchinhampstead!
