Modern groupset on vintage Colnago

Retro Guru
Hi all,

I'm currently working on a Colnago Super frame 1984. Doing a full restoration including rechroming etc etc. in Saronni red. Because I don't want that this bike becomes another wall hanger, I'm considering building it up with a modern groupset to have some more riding comfort. But, to be honest, I have no experience in fitting modern kit on a vintage frame.

I quite dig the Campagnolo Red and Black Centaur groupset. Colors will go very nice with the frame, I think. Link: http://www.shinybikes.com/campagnolo-ce ... 4-10-speed

Main question: how about the bottom bracket? Will the italian threaded external cups go with the frame? BB is 68mm and italian threaded. How about chainline etc? I know how 'old' cup and cone BB's work, but have no experience with modern ones :)

+ the rear will have to be realigned. Best to do this before painting the frame, or is this also possible after respray?

And do I have to expect other problems with mixing era's in one bike :)?

Realign the frame before paint.
Chainline is pretty much fixed with external cup BBs. External cup BBs are available in italian

If it's Italian threaded it will be a 70mm BB... :?

Once the rear has been widened, everything else should fit. What are you going to do about the forks and stem? Stick with quill looks simplest and will retain an overall retro feel.

Nice. Will have the frame realigned before final coat of paint goes on!

Woops, didn't measured so 70mm will be correct. So it looks like the crank from the groupset I linked to will work with the frame, cool!

At the moment I'm thinking to stick with a quill stem. I have a polished Cinelli 1R with the old logo. Not sure if it will work with a black groupset, but worth to try it :).

I'd recommend NOT buying the current Campag Centaur PowerTorque chain set and bottom bracket. See if you can find an older model UltraTorque one. The PowerTorque is easy to fit but impossible to remove, whereas the UltraTorque is easy to fit and remove.
You can find new UltraTorque ones on eBay and sprockets.uk.com

Re:

Then why not go all in & get Campagnolo's 80th Anniversary Gruppo :D

My favourite subject, go ahead and do it, everything should fit fine.
The only potential issues with older frames are braze ons for cable stops and nutted brakes.
I never get frames respaced, I think respacing will do more damage than just squeeezing in the rear wheel.
Power Torque are a pain to remove and the Campagnolo tool is outrageously expensive but can buy pullers from car spares shops for a fraction of the price.
Never miss an opportunity to post my current ride, 1986 frame with all 2014 components :D

That bedraggled is exactly the sort of build I suggest, although my personal taste would be to go for some conventional wheels to avoid an 'alloys on an E-Type' look. The modern UT alloy chainset looks absolutely fine - unlike the Shimano Power Rangers look.

Get yourself a good quality bottom bracket cup spanner to install those cups!

Buying a cheapo' spanner will only mark the individual grooves and make the cups look tatty.

Good idea to put masking tape all over the inner edges of the spanner so when you install the cups it will never mark the cups.
