Mavic hub question

half cog

Senior Retro Guru
Hi.
Somewhere in the deep past I seem to remember a comment about converting the old seven speed 127 oln rear hubs to 130 for eight speed. The idea was that there is or was a kit that you could buy to do it. Presumably a longer spindle and spacers. I appreciate the re dishing involved. Anyone know anything about this?

Re:

Thanks for the reply.Fitting the eight speed freewheel is not so much the concern as not having to bend in the stays on thin wall columbus genius tubing. Bianchi used this stuff and had problems with cracking so I would really rather fit a wheel that went in snug. It will be eight speed but thats kind of a secondary concern at the moment.Would probably be fine but you know. sods law and all that stuff
many thanks again

Re:

Yes you can change the spacing by removing a spacer. Cracking hubs.

Re:

Thanks for that. Can I therefore make my seven speed an eight speed by adding a washer or washers in at that point. I am trying to go the other way so to speak. Anyone done this? Thank you again for the scan.It helps quite a bit to see the drawings

Re:

I've tried this and ended up buying 501 hubs. I personally couldn't get the 500 hubs to extend with the addition of additional washers (but then again I was borrowing washers from other non Mavic hubs). The axle wasn't quite long enough in the end. Not to say it isn't achievable though. What hubs are you dealing with - 500 or 501's?

Re:

Hi.
Its the older type so I presume 500s. Now I know the method of approach I will get in and have a go. If it does not work then I will have to consider whether or not to re build or simply run it on another bike until it dies.To be honest the rim is a tubular and probably half worn already so it may well be the best option to simply relegate it as a spare wheel and start anew. However first I will get the tools out. many thanks for all your help
