MAVIC 637 Paris Gao Dakar cranks - BLACK!

A new one to me. MAVIC 637 cranks, anodized black, with an etched Paris Gao Dakar logo:

To me the pedals seem bricolées. There isn't a really clear picture of them, but they look to me to be a set of standard 640 road pedals with the original cages cut down, and a new set of home-made half-cages bolted on. Prototype or bricolage?

It's certainly a fascinating ensemble, but taken together with the colourful MRL 570 sprocket set I'm beginning to wonder if this is the work of a talented amateur.
