The plot thickens... That paint care sticker is a Zolatone care sticker??

...your Eldridge went for a steal! Shame wrong size...

Yeah the sticker I think it relates to Zolatone...plastic etc

I reckon 1988 now based on horizontal rear drop-outs and rear mech.

Exage Mountain stuff might have been replacements after a crash in the first couple of years. Maybe it was repainted too?

Deore XT had switched to 7 speed in 1989 (M732) so Exage Mountain was the best 6 speed compatible groupset to replace trashed bits.

Interesting theory it is all 6 speed...possible respray... but I have noticed that the forks dont have marin written vertically on them? I know they did in 90 not sure about before...

...and then there is the U brake I can't find a Pine Mountain that was fitted with one?

Must be a repair/repaint circa 1991. They probably got a set of current frame/stem decals and slapped them all on... Whether they were relevant or not!

Using unloved NOS Exage Mountain parts would have been a cheaper fix than sourcing 3 year old M730 bits.

From what I can tell Marin had dropped U-brakes by 1989.

Shame it's a bit of a mongrel. Can the seller shed some light on the history?

....Hmm rode quite well today what ever it is! The seller had it for the last 10 years or so and was pretty clueless when it came to bikes!

Not all forks had the lateral decals on them. I bought my PM from South Bank Cycles in 1989. Still got the Access card receipt............in fact, I may even still be paying it off

Anyway, mine didn't have the fork decals on and mine was the light grey pre Zolatone.

I think this is a 90-91. Given that it has the XT's on it which came after the 88-89 Deore's.

The rear brake is a real puzzler though.

Still looks nice though

Mark.

Check the 3RD number on the frame around bottom bracket. This will give you the year ending, eg "1" will be 1991 ;)

....no numbers...

No numbers?? Also didnt think Marin steels had an 18.5" - only know of 17.5 or next one up is 19 (measured centre BB to centre TT)
Might be wrong though??

Nice bike whatever it is.. :?

After I've been asked to respond with my thoughts, here they are...

The frame and forks are Marin, and are pre 1990. Exact years are difficult to determine as the specs blended between years either side.

I am certain that you are looking at a resprayed frame with replacement decals. The decals are not quite right for the frame either. They are either a mix of several years, or in the wrong position/location.

The Frame's exact identity can only be calculated through its ID number.

Pre 1990 cantis weren't low profile, so smaller frames had U-brakes out of practicality, so you wouldn't catch your feet!! Hence why larger frames use cantis on the rear.

The stem is a mid range item with too much rise, and points towards being a lesser model in the range.

Pine Mountains in 1988 had Prestige tubing and lugs, so that rules out any thoughts about it being that year model.

Pine Mountains came with Deore MT60 or DX components mostly, but this Exage group was used on the lower range models. Palisades had mostly Mountain LX.

So, my opinion is, it's definitely a pre 1990 Marin, but from the mid ranges that has been treated to a facelift at some point, along with a wishful image upgrade! Or it's a Pine Mountain that somebody has downgraded. I would put my money on 1989 BV. Check out the early front fork dropouts, these changed by late 89, also the upswept bars indicate 1989, as the sweep was greater in 88, but very tame in 90.

Still nice, so enjoy it.

Thanks for the input I think you may be right...just strange to have the DX headset and pedals and the XT rear mech...unless they were bought as upgrades through its life? If the decals are a later addition I still don't think they were done recenty...

Oh well my quest for a zolatone marin continues!

Thanks for everyones help.
