Marin Pine Mountain year help...NOW SPLITTING!

Right...I now have the bike infront on me! Its in really good condition the paint and decals are virtually unmarked! But I'm still stuck on the age...There are no identifying numbers on the bottom bracket and I can't find any other stamped numbers on the frame. It has a mix of m730 XT rear mech and Exage Mountain front mech, hubs, Biopace crankset, brake levers canti's and U brake. It also has DX pedals and headset and black araya rims It measures around 18.5" c2c...

Any ideas?

I'm going for 1989 at the moment...

Check the 3RD number on the frame around bottom bracket. This will give you the year ending, eg "1" will be 1991

....no numbers...

Thanks mate took it for a spin today and all works perfectly (after some tweaking)...Undecided if its too small for me all not it measures around 18.5" c2c and feels tiny underneath me and a bit too upright at the moment. I think I need a longer stem like the 1991 Pine mountain might help. But maybe I just need the 20.5"....

well.... I have a '89 Pine Mountain with that very decal design and layout, the only thing is it is light grey. Also it has canti brakes on the back seat stays so maybe it's '87-'88?

Are you sure these are the same decals? Look different to the 89 light grey ones I've seen...

Well the groupo points towards 1989 but I can't imagine the Pine Mountain had plastic canti's and Exage gear. My friend had an original 89 Bear Valley and that was Mountain LX through out. Strange one :?

Yeah is strange for sure...Not sure where the Exage Mountain sits in the groupset hierarchy...but not keen on the plastic levers and front cantis/ubrake or the thumbies to be fair!...and then why an XT M730 rear mech? when the rest is Exage Mountain?

...heres a theory...could the bike have been bought as a frame and built up non spec?...

All very confusing but If it ends up a keeper then might have to loose the Exage stuff for XT although rather limited with the ubrake..

Oh and not forgetting the DX Pedals and headset...which would point more to 1990????

Strange the "marin" decals look a bit to far up the downtube

could be a replacement frame for a warranty job - explains the groupset, an end of year lash up special. or possibly something else with marin decals.

I doubt it was a stickered up job as the stickers are all the ones you would expect to see including one warning label about care when cleaning the frame (see pic attatched)... But a weird mixup of parts...
