Manitou 2 forks

I have just aquired a pair of the above forks and am now in the process of rebuilding them. However, I have two questions:-

1) How do I get the bottom bearing race off the steerer? It appears to have been attempted using the lever method but this has resulted in a cracked / chipped race

2) Is it possible to change the steerer for a longer one or is this just too expensive?

Your expert, or otherwise, opinions will be gratefully received.

Thanks,

Ian

manitou 2's have a detachable steerer i'm sure
undo the 2 x5mm screws at the rear of the crown and it should tap out
replace with a longer /shorter /different dia

Nah, Manitou II's have the really solid CNC'd fork crown with the permanent steerer. The only way you'd get it out would be using heat, then you're looking at dangerously altering the strength of the alloy! Don't do it... :shock:

Each stanchion is secured with two pinch bolts as you said, but not the steerer.

If it's a 1 1/8" steerer lengthen it with one of these;

...they're a Godsend.

As for the crown race, they can be a bit of a bugger because they tend to be somewhat smaller than the crown. Lay the fork flat on a piece of wood with an old towel over it to absorb the shock then tap around the edges with a large, thin flat-bladeds screwdriver until you've opend up a useful gap then stand it on the steerer and gradually work your way around the race tapping it down towards the end - fiddly, and not very elegant, but it works...

They are - used them loads of times myself. Buy a decent fork off eBay dirt cheap because no-one wants it with a ridiculously short steerer (or because it's threaded), slot one of these in and job done. Sweet... :cool:
