Mag 21 SL Ti - New Paint and Stickers....?

compression

Retro Newbie
I searched this forum and did not find any answers, but I have a hard believing no one has brought this up before.

I have an old Rock Shox Mag 21 SL Ti that I would like to restore.
Can anyone tell me how to reproduce the polished-gold finish these fork legs had?

Also, where can I purchase new decals?
Thanks in advance!

new decals from Gil on this forum (I re-did my SL-Ti's and used his decals, and they are superb!). Excellent service, quick turn-around, quality product.

Re:

Thanks for the link to the Mag 21 restoration, but I have read that link and it does not delve into replicating the polished gold look of the original SL legs. The thread just shows a repaint using what looks like standard Mag 21 metallic gold-ish colored paint.

Also thank you for the tip on where to get stickers!

Re:

the legs were highly polished then powder coated. your trouble will be finding a powdercoater with a translucent colour match.

Re:

I've not tried the gold tinted lacquer as buying it over here seems (last time I looked) impossible.

Nearest I had was some bronze-ish spray (tried gold, bronze, copper and a few in between) lightly sprayed on different finished legs as I was playing around. Then a clear gloss on that. Never got to the clear gloss part but the main point is they need to be polished to a mirror for finish, no scratches or dulling or keying

It worked well enough for me. Don't think you would get the greenish tinge they had/have in the laquer though. I'm assuming that was not really by choice.

It can tell you it not a tough finish, at least in spray paint as you have a mirror finish with paint directly onto it.

It probably why the nickelite finish is the toughest finish on the mags. They did away with the glossy look of even the normal mottled gold colouring.

Wadsys finish (is very nice) but in the pictures looks more like a setof standard 94mag21 finish as they came.

Re:

There is a new product available at the moment .

Its made by AK INTERACTIVE and is called TRUE METAL .
its a wax based paint and is totally polishable . Can be airbrushed or brush painted , even put on with a finger .
comes in brass , gold , ally and steel if i remember correctly

Have a look on you tube . Its a modelling product . Was thinking of using it on a pair of legs i have .

i too scored a nice set of SL's a while back, and took them apart and repainted. i played around with about 4 or 5 different versions of gold-ish spray paints. i chose the one that was closest to that chromy-gold finish as i could, and it still came out looking very similar to a regular mag21 finish.

after i had it all back together, i started thinking more about it, and am thinking this might be the route to go:

either polish the legs to shine (by hand or wheel), and then spray with a slightly tinted laquer.

or, they do make some pretty decent "chrome" spray cans. check this comparo vid out:

im thinking this route, with a few coats of the spaz stix, and then a candy gold/yellow top coat, might get close to the original finish.....??

i've had pretty good luck with the metal cast blue and red before, on aluminum.
