Loose BB Cup thread advice needed...

Hi all,

The drive side BB cup on my 80's Holdsworth has slipped off square (as if one side has moved 1 thread over) if that makes sense. I'm sure I read on here that its possible to glue these in?


Any advice gratefully received.

Not quite sure I'm following you there. Do you mean the cup has unthreaded itself from the frame? That would be a little unusual for a British threaded frame, but can happen. A lower strength thread locker like Loctite 222 is what's normally used on things like bottom bracket threads.

You can get threadless bottom brackets designed to be used in bottom bracket shells that have worn threads which might be a better option

You can try locktite and I have had this work successfully in the past but that was before I knew the threadless BB's were widely available and it does need to be the right one as different locktight's are for different things.

It does also depend how worn the threads are and whether both the cup and shell are worn, they are fine threads so it doesn't take that much wear on both to cause a problem. I have also saved a frame that used a cup and bearing type bottom bracket by simply fitting a new cartridge bottom bracket becasue there was a lot more meat on the new bottom brackets cups

I think the problem is the threads within the shell - I changed the BB awhile ago when I found the old cup had a chunk broken off - this might have caused excess play and worn them. In the meantime I'll have a look at the threadless option.

Just fitted a threadless bottom bracket to my old Colnago due to similar reasons , works fine and nobody can tell the difference till they strip it down
