Letting go

Like several people with the same addiction, I am making the first step and am acknowledging I have a problem. With my current quiver well over a dozen bikes in different sorts of completion, I feel the pressures... the time is soon to thin the heard.

Problem is, I don't want to let any of them go.

Each one is a good friend.

You can't just sell your friends off to the highest bidder.....

I am feeling pressures from outside sources.

Ones that I love. Something about wanting to park their car in the garage. Little ones wanting room for their bikes and toys in there also.

Ok, most definately won't get rid of the Ritchey's, or the klunkers. Road bikes stay, need to keep the tandem. Modern hardtail, the full susp..... .... crap..

I have a problem.... I acknowledge I have a problem. This is a good first step. This is a big step. Can I just stop at this step for a while.

Currently I am watching well over 100 thing on the bay. All of them are bike related.

I have a problem.......

Dress them in wigs..take them to dinner and claim they are your better half!

;)

Do you still have fun on each and every one, which one is the least fun?.

Sell that one for a start !

Wow, thats a lot of Bikes. I thought 6 was bad enough. I'm stopping there, but have brought a frame...but won't be building it up for along time to come.

yeah, building a shed is the way to go. Somewhere to keep the kids

Sell them all!

I'll soon be down to 2 retro Fats- one standard for RB meets and one 'Hot Rod' for everything else. I also have my old Cannondale that is a garage queen and stayed for sentimental reasons (also it's not worth much).

It really hurt breaking them down and shipping them off but when they were gone I found that a burden had been lifted from my shoulders. It's been a very cathartic experience and one I would recommend. It's much easier to decide which bike to use now on my rare days off. I've also kept away from the For Sale Section and eBay too which helps.

Just do it, painful now but so much better in the long run.

I've set my limit at how many bikes I can get in and out of my shed without too much swearing and bad temper. Currently still swearing but the language is getting less blue.

My ideal is 6 as follows : 1 x retro rigid mtb classic - Raleigh White Lightnin', 1 x retro workhorse/commuter/tourer - Raleigh Mountain Bike Team, 1 x do it all retro mtb hardtail - Diamond Back Topanga, 1 x modern trail centre specialist - GT iDrive, 1 x Classic Roadster - Rudge Whitworth, 1 x general purpose road bike - Peugeot Normandie.

Unfortunately I have several others to remove from the above equation

A clear outs good for the soul, let other collectors or newbies have some of the joy ;)

keep them all and keep buying them .

and more importantly , ride them all . some once a year , some everyday .

Get rid of the damn things, clean out your garage and you'll clean out your life. I've been making great progress on mine and I can tell you it's well worth it.

I got shot of an extremely fun but complex and expensive car, replaced with a dull-as-dishwater super-low-mileage 'grandad special'. No offense to Grandads, especially those that do more cleaning and maintenance on their cars than actual driving!

I also lost all the camping gear so the wife can't even SUGGEST we use it. Lucky I did it before the great weather started eh?

Also get shot of everything that gives you even the slightest hassle, it feels really good AND you'll have cash to get one, maybe two pristine items to concentrate your passion on. We all need that...

Those will undoubtedly lead to three or four more in time but hey, nobody's perfect

I've set myself a limit now (or to be more truthful my Mrs has.... ) so I've gone with a variety.

I have 2 fully rigid steels - Stumpy and Kona (soon to be one as I trim the Kona), one hardtail steel - C16R, one hardtail alu - Pace, one f/s alu - Proflex and soon to be one fully rigid or hardtail Ti depending on the mood I'm in - Vit T2.

(By hardtail I'm talking sus forks and rigid back end)

I suppose at the moment that's OK until the bigger house is bought ;)
