Late 80s - early 90s Campanolo Headsets

Folks, over the last couple of years I've been assembling late 80s Campag groupsets.

Procuring the headsets has been particularly painful (sadly I'm a `detail' person), it seems to me that the majority for sale out there are incorrectly described or simply described as `C Record era'. It's not surprising: the 1985-1994 Athena, Chorus/Croce, C-Record (2 versions) and Contax headsets look very similar.

Velobase was also misleading, although they have now included my correction for Athena. There's only limited opportunity to describe components on Velobase so I thought I'd write down my findings and share.. Just in case you are in the market for such a thing.

I didn't have either of the 2 C-Record sets easily to hand for photographs, but these are the easiest to spot as they have no chamfering on the cups.

Here you'll find the research, comparison photos, part number comparisons etc:

Let me know if I've got anything wrong - I hope it helps someone, sometime.

Re:

Good research work there!

All Campagnolo headsets from this period look gorgeous to me - shame they're so damn expensive. Currently looking for one to replace the Tange one that's on my Ian May.

That Ian May, incidentally, would make a lovely RBotM! ;)

yeah i always wondered a bout a campag headset i plan to fit on my lemond.
i kind of identified it as chorus but was puzzled by the loose ballbearings
and lack of a series of holes in the top cup.the locking ring is a sloppy fit too.

Re:

wish I saw this thread yesterday. Bought what seems to be a Chorus headset, billed as unequivocally a C Record headset on eBay. But looks to be in great shape and priced at Chorus level price. I am using 80s Athena group anyways.
