Kona Kilauea

Re:

I saw this earlier in another thread after it was highlighted by Retro Spud who sold the Kilauea to the current seller. That particular thread has moved onto a discussion regarding the now common practice of over charging for Retro Bikes and components.

Anyway, the Kilauea on e-Bay is not a "RARE Kona Kilauea North American release" from 1998, as claimed by the seller. Those novel Glow In The Dark Decals on the E-Bay frame were from the 2000 Kona lineup, and the 1998 Kilauea was Reynolds 631 tubing.

I don't have any documented information on the 2000 Kilauea, although it seems similar to the 2001 Kilauea, which also shares the same omission from the Kona Catalogues. It has the same Richey Dropouts, Generic CroMo tubing, but interestingly no Disc Tabs that were on the higher end models down to the Cinder Cone in 2000.

Anyone know some more - is it a similar situation to the Kyber Model?

Not just not in the catalogue, it's not in the tech docs either.

Country special?
This is a quote from a thread on the Kyber, which looks identical to the 2000 Kilauea:

"Kona Kyber was double butted chromoly and had glow in the dark decals as mentioned in the quote taken from FB above. I used to have one of these and can confirm they were used as Whistler/Blackcomb rental bikes, mine was an ex rental which still had the name of the bike shop on it. I'm not sure if that is the only place they were available but Kona world didn't have any recollection of them when I asked years ago. Kona did make a few bikes using Whistler related names, I can recall the "Fissile" which is a local mountain peak, and the "Joyride" which is a trail in the bike park. Both those bikes were full sus. The Kyber could well have been named for "Khyber pass" which is another ski/bike area on Whistler mountain."

The thread starts in 2013 when Anthony mentions the 2000 Kilauea, and it ends up in 2020 where there is reference to a Kyber being ex rental fleet bike from the Glacier Shop (Whistler/Blackcomb retailer):

sold it for £75 and even then it wasn't a quick sale - was a very nice frame for the money but for £400 I'm not so sure

Re:

Blimey! as you say, this version of a 1999 Caldera doesn't have the Goathead or Kona New Drop Investment Cast Dropouts that are a feature of that model.

Is this another example of a Rental Special, like the Kyber, the Fissile and the Joyride, for which I have pictures on file.

Anyway, here is an example of a 1999 Caldera in its' more usual livery:
