Kona Hahanna rebuild + Tech question : Hubs

Rude Dog

Devout Dirtbag
Hi folks,
Currently in the middle of rebuilding a Kona Hahanna '96.
It is in a nearly mint condition other than having been left out in the rain at some point. Even the tyres are the original (Mr Dirt + The Cleaner) and still have the mould bobbles on them!

I have resprayed the frame and forks (Red and Black) and started to put it back together.

I've also (roughly) trued the front wheel - any tips on fine adjustment would be appreciated, but my main concern at the moment would be that I have repacked the front hub and the cap seems loose on one side.

The cap seems to flap about which means it will soon fill with crap. Any tips?
Do I need to clean up the edges and force it into the hub?
Should the grease hold it in?
(To be fair I bought a can or aerosol white lithium grease which is useless as spraying any surface with the aerosol results in you getting a nicely coated face!)
The cap the other side just pushed in and hasn't been out since, I've tried it with this one but it doesn't seem to stick in.
Thanks Al

From the age you should have the parallax hubs with the big fat rubber cones which act as seals. You should find a big washer on the axle just inboard of the outer bearing nut. You need to get the whole rubber bit inboard of the washer, as it's this that holds it in place.

Bearing in mind it's a Hahanna it may have a no-name hub and I just hope it's a Shimano copy (otherwise this advice was a waste of time.)

You also should be using a typical sticky grease not a spray one IMO.

Hi Hamster,
Thanks for the response, Parallax seems to ring a bell, but stupidly I don't have the details to hand.
I don't recall there being any large rubber washers, they are more like steel cups that fit just on the hub, one side fits fine, the other waggles around.
I can try and take a photo tonight if that helps?
I thought the same about the sticky grease but couldn't get any from my local bike store - homebase :-(.

Hmm, sounds like you have some vanilla flavour hubs - Joytech or similar. Not surprising as the Hahanna was always good value and had a nice frame, so they had to save money somewhere.

On the older Shimano ones the metal dustcover always just slif into place, provided you hadn't bent it too much when loosening it...
