Right then Kona geeks, what year is this beast?

First look you'd say 1996 with the decals but no-no, they are after-market jobs and the paint scheme / colour is not original. It's got a ribbed down tube, in-built seat tube bolt and rack mounts which would mean 1993. But then it's sporting 1995 stem and P2's. Then it's got 1996/7 LX cranks, XT rear mech, bar and seat post.

Whatever it is, it needs work that's for sure.

I'd say it's a '94 that's been modified before repainting. The rear brake cable stop and built in seat bolt clamp are not original.

Re:

Outstanding knowledge sir. Is the front collar original as well. To me it seems a bit harsh/angular.

the dark green was the '93 Explosif colour, ditto for the ridged down tube. cable stop for the rear brake looks off because it was designed for RH lever= rear brake

The tubing was the same in 93 & 94. 94 was dark green, 93 was a silver front faded into a midnight blue rear end.

The project two's are from a 94 model. 93's weren't suspension corrected and had different decals.

iveto- I have the US 93 Kona catalogue, spec may have been different in the UK version.

the Explosif was spec'd with a suspension (Tange Struts in the pic) but they hadn't changed the frame/fork geometry yet so you had to adjust via stem rise and tyre size if you changed forks

The two attached pictures show a 94 catalog Explosif and a 93 catalog Explosif. Note the different fork options and suspension corrected geometry in the 94 catalog.

Re:

Hmm, studying the drop-outs it doesn't look like any Kona ones I've seen before.... anybody got a pic with similar ones?

Get it (US 93 Kona catalogue) scanned so we can add it to the collection
