Kona Cindercone Refurb Help

After finding the Forum through my brother and his Cannondale project, it has inspired me to look into getting my old Cindercone out of my dad's shed and return it to a usable condition!!

As far i can remember its about a 93-94, but it's running a Suntour group set, i left it in the shed after half of the flange of my lovely Ringle rear hub got smashed!!

So my problem is what to run on it, can i source a hub that'll run a Suntour cassette, or if funds allow could i but a modern hub, maybe even a Shimanio Alfine?? The Chainset will prob need replacing so i think changing away from Suntour may be best way to go?

It's very early days, but i'm considering converting it to a semi road bike to use for my commute to work??

I'll dig it out and put up some pics soon, i'd better build up my 5 posts first too

I've had a little look on the site you found the archive section, love looking at all the bike's from my youth!!

So a bit more info on my bike....

It's was orginally a 91 bike, the green/gold colour, that was until i went far too fast into a bomb hole and ended up with the forks up by the bars and the top tube almost broke in two! Plus a very concussed Ad!!

So once i recovered! I re-framed it into a 93 Cindercone frame and forks, thus why it has a Suntour groupset and not the Deore LX

Thinking of building it up with a 9 speed hub and running it 1 x 9 for road use, would the axle size be the same?

More modern stuff will work on it perfectly well though.

Thanks Anthony, i think i'll prob look to go more modern, should easier to get hold of etc.

The site has a fantastic resource with the archive, i've spent ages just looking through bikes back in the day

Am i right in assuming the frame width will be the same as the more modern stuff? I've got a spare SLX rear mech and shifters, so could i fit a 9 speed cassette on a new hub??

Yes, it's the same 135mm spacing. It's a matter of personal taste, but to my eyes some modern parts do look a bit wrong on a retro frame. For example, the frame colour schemes were designed to harmonise with silver parts. Now parts are all black, so sometimes it doesn't quite work visually. Usually the most out of place part IMO is a modern chainset.

I would keep it vintage! It's your bike, but finding a cheapo LX, XT groupset is far easier than worrying about replacing headsets, derailleurs, cassette, etc.
