Kona Caldera 1997

Re: Kona Caldera 1997 - unicorn scenes

Looking good! Agreed again on the stem, too.

My Cinder Cone has skinwalls. They look passable, but that's because the bike is gold with a gold Judy and it used to have tan grips.
I know it'd look a lot better on gumwalls, and I'm intending to get some for it.
They get ridiculously dirty too...

Re: Back to Caledra

here's mine a 98 I believe ser # 6432 stamped at a right angle to bb. It's been to mars and back and still going no signs of cancer. It came with the brodie decaled project 2 fork to the left of the 3. The 3 project 2 forks I have the 2 on right are spinners and no marking on the left on with brodie decals. Was that welded in richmond bc?

Re: Kona Caldera 1997 - unicorn scenes

Right, let's get this back on subject. We can save the skinwall vs. blackwall debate over on the chat sub-forum.

Have I mentioned I really don't like cabling up? Specifically setting up the gears. ;) I think the combination of 'the last job on the list' and my impatience to stand back and admire the finished article as well as getting a leg over it, results in expected disappointment, a mess and a trip to the LBS. Pretty pathetic when you think about it since in reality it isn't that hard to get right.

After a a few f8cks and sh8ts I got it all set up just how I like it. The yellow Onza grips were just too yellow as expected so I reverted back to the black lock-on ODI's. I reckon they work well leaving just the two yellow items at the front and rear: a nice symmetry. With the first rays of spring sunshine filtering into the garage and onto the paint work, so I finally got a good look at the very under-stated metallic flake in the paint. With that sun-light I could make out greens and purples glinting away.

I managed to get my leg over her for the first time but as you can see, I'm missing one last set of critical components. At least from a cock-pit perspective she's spot on. At this rate I should be ready for Easter so here's hoping for dry weather so I can go for a shake-down spin.

Err, yes you have mentioned it from time to time

For some reason I find it really therapeutic, and regard it as the nice job at the end that puts the icing on the cake so to speak.

Anyway Al, well done for doing a great job there from start to finish - she looks proper sorted, so roll on the Easter break.... you can tell us all what you think of her.

Pip.

It is good thing that the sides of the saddle are black, so it is pretty much overall matching.

Great job! I hope we can see some pics from ride...

Re:

Well I got my 18" version through early last week. It was quite dull so I broke out the T-cut and polish. I see what you mean about the decals Al, just like my Ti Kona's where, cracking and coming away in chunks! Once Polished you can definitely appreciate the depth of the powder coat.

As a frame it felt a lot heavier than my '95 Explosif and on the scales it shows 4.7lbs compared to 4.32lbs. However the tubes all feel very pingy and are skinny to look at. A 27.2mm Seat post fits like a glove which is handy as I had a Syncros hardcore going begging.

The Serial no starts KO96 and it has the cool little goat heads on the drop outs plus the larger head on the hanger.

There is indeed a bulge at the base of the seat tube, which is actually a pita as it means I cant use a lovely m952 low band front mech. I've ordered a high band version but this means that the uber cool Kona custom thumb is obscured by the clamp, bah!

I've built it up quickly with parts I had spare but I am quite keen to run it as a single speed eventually.

I was on board until you wrote the word Single Speed

The paintwork looks excellent and like mine, I see you've got a few of those strange looking 'ripples': where the paint has somehow folded a little. Do you know what I mean? I wonder if this was down to the technique's being used or maybe even trialed.

Either way, she's in a great nick and without question, with that flanged seat-tube, is definitely unique compared to the others we know of, so that's proper cool. It's got to be a Tange variant...maybe?!

As for your set-up, if it get's used and you like it, go for it.
