I have really liked these machines for many years and I suppose a lot of it is to do with the history of the brothers and their reputation. It is also why I am going to try to preserve the paintwork as best I can. It is going to be a challenge that's for sure. I had a very brief look this afternoon and first tried to use a light scrub pad to minimise the rust spots, which was partially successful and then T cut a few places. While the rust is there the paint that was T Cut comes up very nice and shiny with minimal effort, which just goes to show how nice it was when put away. My friend said it was really nice and shiny when he stopped using it with no rust at all
So the plan will be at this stage, which may change as it progresses, rub the rust back lightly in places, touch up any bigger spots very sympathetically, t cut the whole lot, polish and then use a really good wax to protect it. Then build with some nice usable kit of the right period and ride it as much as I can
The other 'issue' I had was the bottom bracket. Without really looking I grabbed my Shimano tools and went to undo it only to find it is a FAG with the resin/plastic cups so need to either buy a tool or borrow one as I will only need it once
Thankfully the stubborn screw from the rear rack that was stuck in the thread came out at the first real attempt, it has had a decent spray of oil last weekend so that must of helped. That has been the only stubborn bolt on the whole thing, so does show that it was looked after and appreciated before it was buried away.

Well done on a great find. JT are one of the best frames of that era and all the owners I've spoken to rave about them. Try and keep that original paint for as long as you can even if you have to touch it up. If you can't then there is a guy in the North east that specialises in re-painting Jack Taylors.

Was out riding this afternoon so not much done to the Jack Taylor, though I did give it a T cut after trying to scrub some of the rust spots to minimise them. The scrubbing wasn't much of a noticeable success though this was just a very brief trying of ideas rather than a concentrated effort. I thought before I put it away I would do a quick T cut and see how it looked overall. I didn't have a quality polish so it was just cut rather than polished. The rust is certainly noticeable and the quantity of it is also very noticeable. While it's only surface there is a fair quantity but still going to try and touch up some of it. While the touch up may be noticeable, it is far better than seeing it peppered with rust, in my opinion. There is a couple of bits that need it for protection rather than just for cosmetic reasons. The paint that is there, really shines bright red, more than the pics do justice.
A couple of things of note since starting this, one is the interesting decals. The downtube decals are the Mondrian style of later models and these usually have a Mondrian style head and seat tube style Mondrian decals but this one has the old style seat and head tube decals associated with the earlier Gothic transfers. It had most likely been ordered like this as it's not the way it was done as standard and the finish is original. The second and means nothing really but just adds to the individual hand made finish is that on the box lining on the bottom of the left fork, towards the rear has a big 'swerve' or sweep out of line with the rest of it.
Fellow Macretro Mr Panda is sending over a BB tool this week for it.
I dropped the fork out to double check the frame number and the XT headset while pitted on the outside of the top cup was perfect inside and full of grease, perfectly adjusted and not a mark on bearings or race.

The quality shines through. Some very small retouching where needed is all thats needed in my view. There is nothing wrong with a few battle scars as far as Im concerned. I just love that box lining.

Here is a quick pic of the box lining on the left fork leg. It means nothing of course but just adds to the individuality/handbuilt nature of Jacks painting.

What are the chances of finding a Jack Taylor in your size where you live? It must be fate.

So what are the plans and how does it affect the rest of the fleet? Is the Mercian on a shoogly peg now?
