Is This the Right Place for Me?

Re:

All of my retros are karma frames and built up with whatever I can find cheap/karma. I rarely ride them due to my health but it's just nice to have them there as a reminder of where I started. Yes I have fancy modern bikes with suspension, hydraulic brakes and clutch mechs but nothing will take away the fun I had on my £5 giant stone breaker when that was all I could afford and could barely ride.

Cheap old retros are what got me back into cycling. At one point I had 13 bikes (pretty much all Raleigh's and marins) with a combined value less than half of what my new bike owes me. So you're in the right place don't worry.

The cost of the bike is unimportant. The value of the fun it provides is all that matters.

I entered Mountain Mayhem on a £5 bicycle with a 'spare' £30 bicycle (in case things went wrong)

so you are in the right place.

This and this! You have exactly the right idea, buying low and investing a little elbow grease is always the best way to go. I have recently been doing a 14 mile commute on a £5 1970's Italian shopper type thing which makes me smile like a loon

There's also no end of parts available on here and plenty of good folk to offer advice/help

Best of luck with the ongoing recovery. I hope that the lifestyle changes still allow consumption of biscuits by the way - v.important on here :D

Apologies I was feeling a bit down yesterday and sounding off a bit. Had a day off work and a walk on the beach with my missus and a little snifter in a beach front bar, got back and saw the replies, thanks for the affirmations. I looked at the my bikes again and thought they're right, sod it, so what they're not high end I like them.

I guess I'll stick around for a while, there's a yellow bike down the bottom of the garden that I might turn my attention to. Maybe I'll keep that one to myself.

I've been given the all clear and signed off from the Hospital so all good there. As for biscuits, I can take them or leave them. Carrot Cake, now that's another matter.

I've never been able to afford high end bikes or kit and have been on this site over 10 years with no feeling of being looked down on for my bikes, it's a great family to belong to and I have no intention of taking my sorry collection any where else. I do like to admire other's bikes, high end or not, so keep scrolling through and enjoying fettling your bikes whatever their value :)

Depending on location, I can drop off some stuff if you get bored.

i've often asked this same very question. In the early days it was. Going to the meetings, buying parts. But now it seems very not for me. Maybe next year it will be different?

Guilty. I only show off my 'better' bikes.

I only have 2 that will never be sold. One is a Kona Fire mountain I got for £50.

where abouts are you?

Oh it’s not far at all .... I believe it’s about two inches on the map

I'm in the frozen wastelands of Hampshire with a stunning view the dreaming spires of Fawley, where I grew up.
