Is my Headset larger than my stem?

I currently have a 1" quill but it appears that the tube is larger? there is like a metal sleeve making it fit ?

Just wondering if i could fit a larger fork

I had a set of forks once that had been sleeved strategically so it was effectively a 1 1/8 at the headset contact points but was really a 1 inch steerer elsewhere. Maybe your forks have had the same treatment?

1" headset quill stemwill measure 22.2mm
1-1/8" quill stem will measure 25.4mm

then measure your steerer external diameter to get its size which will be the actual measurement and not just a name.

Better than guessing.

Measured the quill and it is 22.2mm but the sleeve that it goes into measure 25.4mm...
So does this mean I can after all get a fork with a 1 1/8 steerer?

Yup, looks like you've got some sort of shim/adapter in there.

The stem's an old quill, the frame's a newer 1 1/8" threaded.
If you want to upgrade the fork, you could go with any newer 1 1/8" steerer fork with a change to a threadless headset and appropriate stem.

The frame is from 1991ish, it's a giant cadex carbon fibre frame.
I wanted to put a 1 1/8 fork on it a while ago but was told by forumers it was impossible to do being a 1" quill.

1991 would be right around the 1" -1 1/8" changeover time, so maybe it was a new frame fitted with older parts, thus requiring the shim?

If you take the stem out, the aluminium shim bit should pull out of the steerer tube, leaving a 25.4 mm/ 1" bore to suit a larger diameter quill stem.

Just to make sure you could remove the top nut of the headset. The external diameter of the thread revealed should be 28.6mm/1 1/8" (not 25.4mm/1").

I've done a search on google and alot of the images of the same bike have a different blue stem...

my bike..

Could it be that these bikes had a 1 1/8 quill stem as standard? and mine has been fitted with a 1"? maybe the previous owner wanted more height and he already had the current stem as a spare? as it is alot steeper than the original.

I think you are exactly right. Somebody has shimmed the inside of the steerer.
