Is it me or are there less people taking up Mountain Biking?

Like a lot of people on here I`ve seen most stuff come and go but recently, ie; the last year or so there have been less new mountain biking `enthusiasts` being noticed.
When I was riding rigid steel bikes in 1992 there wasn`t the en mass MTB community there is now. It was done mostly for the fun and to be a bit different with little emphasis on ensuring you had the best kit available. Every 2nd middle aged bloke I know in the last 2 or 3 years, either guys I know locally or husbands of female work colleagues were splashing big bucks on their first MTB (usually a full susser) that they had no idea of it`s heritage, background or even how to use it properly. A manual wheelie or terms like butting or geometry mean absolutely zip to these people. Now, this isn`t all bad as it`s keeps business going and keeps interest up so I`m not knocking them.
I don`t care if some unfit slightly fat guy nearing 50 buys a £3000 bike and all the gear, to ride to work and maybe through the odd puddle in the park, good on him but it seems to be kinda on the wane. It has, as we all know been a bit of a fashion thing for a lot of people for a few years and mountain biking is changing that fast now and getting more expensive maybe its burning itself out? Is this putting people off? I mean £6k and £7k bikes?

Cheap = No good
Expensive = Fun and trendy .

The above isn`t obviously the case but is sometimes seen as so.

Maybe somebody from the trade can comment in regards to what is actually shifting?

Ah

Things come and go out of fashion and its the same with cycling. There are alots of owners who have paid serious money on bike and kit. But saddly will all into the "all the gear but no idea zone".

Mountain Biking is great fun but with all thing effort has to be put in to get results. Put in the effort. Learn how climb. Have the mindset that getting of the bike s not an option. Enjoy the ride.

Re:

Roadbikes have been receiving some pretty big media attention over the last few years with the Olympics, TDF, Sir BW, Sir CH, Cav, Froome etc etc, I am amazed just in the last few years how many more road bikers I see on the road.

Now that you mention it. I did see see two kitted out roadies today.

+1 road bikes.

For folk taking up cycling for the first time, road bikes are getting all the attention for the reasons widowmaker points out. The same reason I'm sure is also what is 'converting' many mtbers as well.

Re:

I used to be in the MTB camp from the mid 80's until about 2009, if you call it that, then I started roadbiking seriously about 5 years ago, now I have been converted to MTB's again :p

And you know who is to blame - Retrobike

I have been riding mtb since mid-90's, but picked up my first road bike last summer. I could probably count on two hands the number of times I've been out on mtb in the last 12 months  .

I know..."must do better"!

But it demonstrates the OP's point. There is a lot to be said for road biking, and with the recent publicised UK success in the sport, the marketing types have latched on to it and rammed it downpour throats. Until mtb gets some kind of public limelight, high-profile, posterboy/girl (think Pendleton, Trott, etc), I think it will play second fiddle for some years to come.

I agree, we need a new poster boy/girl :p
