Inherited Dawes Galaxy and Lady Galaxy from the 70's

Retro Newbie
Hi Everyone,
I have inherited 2 vintage Dawes bikes in completely original condition with no custom parts added. The Galaxy is metallic brown with gold hand applied finishing to the lugs and frame. It has suntour 10 speed gears, 531 butted tubes, Weinneman centre pull brakes with dual levers, and a Dawes branded chainset. I have cleaned it up and it is in fantastic condition with no dents, rust, dings or chips.

The lady galaxy is metallic red with 531 butted tubing and hand painted dawes logo's and a sililiar spec to the Galaxy. I'm not totally sure of the vintage, and am in the process of cleaning dust off them as they have not been used in a long while. Both are in excellent condition with no rust whatsoever. I will post up pictures shortly. Can anyone tell me how to ascertain the exact age please and of course what these two beauties might be worth? Are they even collectable?

Both bikes have half chromed forks with no 531 decals on them if that helps with ageing them.

thanks in advance,
kk

Re:

Firstly, welcome to Retrobike....
If your bikes have the original weinmann brake calipers on there should be a manufacture date stamp on the back of the bridge that looks something like this.

The year is in the centre, this one is 1977.

Looking forward to seeing some pictures of your bikes. Are you planning to ride or sell them?

I wouldn't say that they are collectable, however they are superb touring bikes and still command decent prices as a result. I would expect around £150-200, depending massively on detail.

Hi All,
Here are some pictures, albeit low res due to the upload limits.
Please let me know what I have if possible, plus other comments welcome.
Now that they are cleaned up, the mens bike really is in excellent nick, and the lady galaxy has been used more.

i would suggest late 70's , the hubs should be date coded ie 2 set of numbers ie 12 78 would denote 1978 .

both look really nice bikes

Re:

Thanks for the comments folks. What I would really like is a 753 based road bike so these machines will be up for sale next week. EBay me thinks.....
