Is there anyway to restore old hubs?

I've got my old XT's and the front is a little bit rough even with new bearings.

Can anything be done?

If it's just the cones that are worn then you will be able to replace them, but if the bearing surfaces inside the hub are badly worn then there isn't much you can do I'm afraid.

On the rear if you are lucky and it's just the drive-side bearing which is bad, then you can bolt on a replacement 7 spd freehub body, which includes the bearing race.

But, as you've pointed out, it's the front which is the problem.

You can get a cheap Shimano hub with good bearing, and press out the bearing race, repace shagged race in XT, good as new

or if you want to get creative? it possibe to remachine the bearing seat to accept sealed cartridge bearings
