How old??

Re:

The answer is kind of in the forum title

ie. Up to 1997 is generally considered "proper retro" for the purposes of this site at least.

I think anything over 10 years old is retro really, my mrs would disagree though and just say it's "old crap"

Re:

We're in 2019. So any thing older then 2009 is retro.
Any thing older than 1999 is vintage.
Maybe change the name to vintage bikes it would make more sense. ;)

I had fully rigid bikes until the end of '95 and my first full suspension was early '97 so that, for me, suggests the forum has it right. Suspension at the front changed what me and my mates rode and full sus. changed it again.
I love the forum but I'm only interested in owning and riding full sus. but it's good that the older MTB heritage is being preserved.

Re:

I’m still a bit unsure about suspension, feels a bit like a trend to me. May be in a few years I will consider that.

I always enjoy these discussions as it's been a long time since the 97 cutoff point was introduced.

1997 still makes sense as a time when technology made a significant change.

I am starting to see the period around 2009 being another important time and end of an era. My 09 Yeti ASR has 26" wheels, 1 1/8 headtube, 100mm/135mm Q/R hubs, 25.4mm bar, threaded BB, 9spd drivetrain, seatpost that doesn't move unless I get out an allen key. My memory is blurry over the next few years as standards started to change but this was the tipping point.
