Help to identify 83/84 Raleigh

Retro Newbie
Hi all,

I am hoping someone can give me some further information about a second hand Raleigh I purchased a few years ago. I am now (finally) planning to build it up properly using modern parts and would like to know which model it originated as. As far as I am aware the only original parts are the frame and fork.

Frame number is WG3XXXX- I have referenced with the catalogue images at bulgier.net and searched these forums but to no avail. I believe it to be from 83 or 84, however it has rack mounts (but no clearance for guards as I found out this winter) and none of the models with fastback stays do. From searching the threads here it appears some of you have a depth of knowledge on Raleigh's from this era so if you are able to help out it would be greatly appreciated!

Clues:

No markings on the dropouts to identify Campagnolo/Gipiemme.
'Repainted by Bob Jackson Cycles' sticker (may explain the above).
531c sticker.
No windows in the lugwork.

Nice looking frame, fastback and sloping forks :). The 3 means 1983 but aside from that its a little after my time. I'll wait for the more knowlegable guys like MrW :)

Re:

Really a bit of a mystery this one :?: :?:

83'/84' only bike that came with 'shot in' stays and under top tube cable routing was the team frame (which were made to order), the totally confusing bit is the mudguard eyes, the only thing I can think is that someone has changed the dropouts at some time, although I cannot for the life of me think why :?: :?:

The above one Kermit? But with mudguard eyes ....

Re:

Thank you for the information! I had not noticed the different placement of the cable guides in the catalogues before.

I will try and do it some justice with the build. Considering a strip/respray so the mudguard eyes may find themselves on the end of a hacksaw/file...

Interesting...

I'm with Shaun and Kermit on this one, as it 'appears' to be a Team Replica based on the shot in rear stays and top tube cable routing.

Could have started life like this:

I believe that the 1984 Model's frame is identical, albeit painted in 'Panasonic' colours

I suspect that the mudguard eyes aren't original and were brazed on when it was repainted.

There ought to be some markings on the drop outs, unless, of course someone did change them for ones with mudguard eyes

A strip and respray would do it justice and definitely get rid of the redundant mudguard eyes and you will have a superb starting point for a marvelous bike :D :D

Yes - agree. A team replica from 14 weeks into '83, resprayed with added mudguard eyes.

I've got an '84 `Team Replica Replica' in build - the frame actually started life as a `Competition' model gunmetal grey and not featured in the sales catalogues, but was the the same as the Team Replica, apart from the top mounted brake cable guides.

I'd return it to TI colours, lose the mudguard eyes and purchase one of the several team jerseys on ebay at the moment. Then you can be Jan Raas!
