Help needed Peugeot Python headsets problems

Hi all have been using this site for reference for quite some time but have never posted untill now as have a issue that I can't seem to solve and now this is the place to find someone with the answer..

I have a old Peugeot Python and striped it down some time ago to rebuild and never got around till now, somewhere down the line I seem to have lost the headset now the the problem is that the original forks are 1inch but the frame is 1,1/8 how dose this work and how do I fix it.

Well thats a bit weird. Have you measured the fork outer diameter and headtube inner diameter? I assume it's a threaded steerer?

Hi yes it's a threaded steerer, took it to a local bike shop and they presumed it was a inch headset judging by the fork and then assessed and found out the head tube was an inch and an eighth puzzled them to.

As you can see from a stock photo the quill stem is very thin compared to the head tube.

Might it be a BMX standard 1" headset? The head tube is larger than normal for BSC 1", but smaller than 1 1/8", and the quill is also slightly slimmer than normal:

They were sometimes used in early or inexpensive MTBs.

If it is a 1 1/8" (34mm) head tube there are adapters available, but the first step is to get an accurate measurment. Got a Vernier caliper?

I think one-eyed-jim might be right here.
I recall having a Puch ATB and also a 80's Peugeot mtb, both of which had non-standard headset/stem sizing.

You really need an accurate measurement to know for sure.

The GT Corrado frame I am selling appears to have a 1 1/8" headset to fit 1" forks fitted, as they are not the original forks:

If you get stuck, let me know as I could remove it and sell the frame and forks separately.

I had the Team Canyon Pron from 1990 and that used a 1" fork in an 1 1/8" head tube.
I never managed to source a spare headset, but the bike got stolen anyway!
I have no idea why they used this set up.
I would use a regular 1" headset and get some shims for the head tube, or make some.
