and am i right in thinking, the air valve is a needle if i unscrew the screw from the top cap? which i guess means i need to purchase pump i dont have one!!

id ask the local biek shop but he literally chases people out of his shop who aren't spending a decent amount!!!..dont dare ask him for anything that costs a quid or so on its own!... doesnt realise one day that person may want to buy a bike!!

oops...quick rant there!

RS mag 21, the B sticker is a Bontrager badge sticker, in the position the Mag21 sticker would usually be.

Yes they use a needle pump, cheap to pick up on the bay or pop a wanted add up on here.

Go in to your LBS, ask the question, and if he is not interested/wants to chase you out the shop tell him exactly what you said, you may actually want to buy a bike one day, and he has helped make up your mind to A) go else where, or B) you will get one off the internet, might give him something to think about while he's struggling to make his books show profit at the end of the month!

As I said in the other thread, and as Unit 3 says above, a Mag21 fork, and yes the air valves should be under the screw in the centre of each top cap.
The "B" stickers are, as pointed out above, simply Bontrager stickers that someone has put on the forks at some point.
The problem you mentioned in the other thread is most likely low air pressure, my first port of call would be to check the air pressures and adjust as necessary, you may find that's all they need, if you're lucky.

You'd be hard pushed to find anything for £1 in my local bike shop! even inner tubes start at about £8 each!

yeh in a way i feel for the LBS nowadays... but really they survive on customer service... what they can offer over halfrauds etc is personal service, minor repairs, friendly enthusiasm...with th ehope of return custom...and this guys just arrogant....! sorry for dual thread... the last one was abotu spongy forks...then i started this to find the valve and identify them.... maybe should have continued on the same thread in hindsight!!

Definitely MAG21

If I remember correctly, a standard football type needle valve is too thick and can damage the fork.

ah ok thanks...ive put a wanted ad up so hopefully someone on here can help...struggling to find the needle ones on ebay

I use a standard football needle for my Mag family forks, BUT.... I modify them first.

In my experience, the diameter isn't the problem. It's that most ball needles feature a cut window near the tip, in the side of the needle. This, and the relatively flat point on the needle wears at the air valves.

I cut off the tip of the needle above the side window, and chuck the needle in a power drill. I turn the tip with the drill between 2 blocks of steel, pressed together in a "V", or in a right angle corner formed by 2 pieces of metal. This way, you can slowly form the tip into a blunt hemisphere with the hole in the centre. THis seems kinder to the valve.

If you do bugger the needle valve in the fork, you can make your own replacements by moulding 8mm diameter cylinders from RTV sealant. I use a wooden block 16mm thick, drilled with 6 or so 8mm dia. holes, and greased inside the holes. I cast the RTV sealant into the blocks, allow them to set for a few days, then press out the cylinders (vice) and trim their ends. The best ones are then run thru lengthwise with a sharpened spoke (forming the "valve"), and then they seem to perform as well as the now unobtanium old valves.

Good luck!

J

Re:

If you get around to servicing then they are a 1993 MAG21, but actully have a few years newer crow fitted, possible switched to ahead at some point?
