Retro Newbie
Hi Ive just picked up a 98 Kona cindercone frame ad rockshocks and wat to build it up for the summer. Im brand new to the retro scene in fact my bike got stole at xmas a 98 Specialized Rockhopper Comp A1 which i didn't realise id bought so long ago! time flies as you get past 40...

Im not sure what wheels chain set etc to put on it, i was a fan of stx but not sure if its around or would fit

any pointers in the right direction would be great
thanks

STX is no longer made, but you can quite easily pick up the parts you need on this forum, either in the "MTB For Sale" area, or put a "wanted" advert in the "MTB Wanted" part of the forum, also keep an eye out on eBay.
The STX parts will fit, although there are afew things you might want to measure or find out the size of to ensure you buy the correct size parts... eg. front derailleur (check the seat tube diameter), headset size, bottom bracket axle length etc...

One other thing to consider if you aren't concerned about originality is to get a groupset deal. Merlin cycles were doing a V-brake 10 speed Deore set for around £100 the other day. It didn't have a chainset or BB but you could fit a nice 5-arm retro one rather than a frighteningly ugly 4-arm modern one. Any 8/9/10 speed chainset will work fine.

Although of course, frighteningly ugly four arm chainsets were available in 1998! ;)

1998 with STX-RC ushering in the mother of all common 4arm BCDs with the FC-MC40

The fact that they were period correct doesn't make 4-arm look nice to me. At least the original ones were more restrained than the current crop which appear to have been designed by the Power Rangers...

Anyway, Konas should have Sugino cranks fitted. That's the law.
