Help! I can't tell the difference between cheap and expensive (bad & good??) Gripshift shifters.

This pair came off a Team Marin that was full of otherwise expensive kit such as Hope hubs & disc brakes, Mavic ceramic rims, XTR F & R mechs, Machine Tech levers, Cooks Bros Racing cranks, but I know nothing about whether they are any good or not. In my ignorance they look pretty much like any other Gripshifters to me.

Any info welcome on whether they're just fit for the bin or it's worth keeping them for future use.

SRT-800-II - the best version without resorting to SRT 900 which were a bit naff.

These were the second generation of the SRT 800 X Ray and can be differentiated because of the smokey 'clear' plastic that was not as prone to cracking as the first gen clear plastic ones, which cracked as soon as they left the factory.

only other ones worth using are SRT600 and SRT500 (pref with metal spring upgrade).
Keep well away from SRT200/100 range, they are terrible and if you used them would put you off them for life ;)

Of course this is before the Sachs influence hit GripShift.

dispite what ben says i've found that all gripshift works the same
and thats adaquate ,a bit better on some bikes and a bit worse on others
those are the x-ray ones and hi end tho most cracked
great for a weight weenie build tho

I quite liked them, found that they worked fairly well through harsh winter mud and made fairly precise changes when set up properly. Plus the 2nd version were less likely to crack*

*they will still crack.

Look at the right side shifter, just to the left of the spring... crack inline with a weak spot or scratch ?

I use SRT500 and 600's (well did use my 500)

recently tried SRT200 and they just have vague shifting positions and need a lot more effort to move, constantly having to think about shifting and over and under shift rather than just shift with the higher models. IT's the way they rotate around the bar rather than a plastic part of the shifter that is the problem with them.

SACHS Wavey were better, left hand shifter had more clicks (depending on version) and much simpler than even Grip-shit.
