Righty oh, I'm in sanfrancisco at the moment and thought since I am here I should really head up to have a noses around Fairfax and a bit of the north bay area.

I won't have a bike with me and my Girlfreind despite attempts to persuade her other wise isn't keen on cycling so not hopeful of hitting any trails, so any recomendations of things to see (The car park mosaics are on the list).

Also any decent bike shops in the area? Anywhere to grab lunch etc etc.

Thanks in advance.

Rob

Get a bike you will regret it for as long as you live, even a short run out will suffice and mind and say hi to charlie if you see him.

First time to SF/Oakland? If so, I'd recommend a drive in the Marin headlands nortth of SF, perhaps a visit to Cathedral Grove (massive old growth redwoods) in the John Muir National Forest there in the Headlands.

Scouma's for tasty seafood in Sauslito.

How much time do you have?

Can't she sit in the car and wait for you, tell her you will be five minutes;-)
If I got to Fairfax there is no way you would get me away before I
had a ride on some of the trails named after Marin bikes;-)

Point Reyes Station where Mike's Black Mountain Cycles is - lovely organics cafe over the road buys you time for a proper wander around the amazing bike shop re. museum... ;-)

PM Fairfax Pat - he'll show you around and how to get up to the Repack run.

Rob,

Yes, check out the Repack mosaics at Bolinas Road and Mono Way (one block up from Broadway. Next door, grab a pint and a brat at Gestalt House, or for a full meal head down to Iron Springs Brew-Pub (also in Fairfax, but toward San Anselmo on Center Blvd.).

Next door to ISBP is Sunshine Bikes. Gary Fisher worked there until '79 when he formed MountainBikes with Charlie Kelly. See also Fairfax Cyclery. They may have rentals for you.

Repack is three miles or so up Cascade Canyon (take Bolinas Road two stop signs up from downtown). The rain is just starting to fall now (after a week-long hiatus), so traction is just getting good. :) But perhaps the best intro ride heads you up Iron Springs Road to the Tamarancho Loop clockwise to B-17 Extension, then westward to the top of Repack. You can get a $5 T'rancho day pass at either bike shop.

Oh, and your last MTB highlight should be the exhibit at SFO airport, which chronicles Northern California's contributions to the sport, 1973-2012. The exhibition will be up until February 3. The display can be found in the International Terminal in the central galleries just beyond the central ticket counters.

Cheers, Joe
