Long story, but this is my baby and I am selling it. I have had it since new and used it a lot throughout the 90s and early 2000s then got I to road riding and my off-roading has tapered off in the past decade. I have had it boxed up at times and out of use, but every once in a while I would take it out for a burn and get a huge rush.
I bought it with a Manitou 3 and switched out for a Judy XC when I could find an affordable one. I have used it with forks ranging from a 2" Manitou to a 3.5" marzocchi, but my sweet spot was at 3" with a Duke. I now use a Fox Float RL80 that has been tuned down to 70mm, so it has hit that same sweet spot with added Fox-y goodness...
In 2007, I had Chris Dekerf weld a disc mount onto the frame. He said he likely welded the frame originally when he worked at Rocky just before his dekerf brand got off the ground. I foolishly did not have him remove the canti studs and cable hanger, so now new owners can choose retro or modern, (though rim brakes are inferior in every way, performance wise!)
The frame is a 20" model, with a 23.25" top tube and Tange Prestige Concept tubing. The geos are similar to a modern Rocky 26er, but mine has a shortish TT as long stems were considered high performance then. I am 6'1" and use a 130mm stem. There are no dents or cracks but there is a fair bit of chainsuck from bad chaining back in the 90s. I sanded and sprayed from a can a nearly perfect match of blue. There are several other touch ups on the frame done the same way - rough and ready, but with a great colour match of a unique colour. All decals and paint are original - still ok, but I have pondered re painting many times, mostly for preservation reasons.
It is a great bike that I thought would be my final MTB, but a nice 29er has come along and when I realized that I needed to sell one of them (shortly after buying the 29er frame) I decided that I would go with a 29er wheel size.
At the moment, I am selling the following:
Frame: $400 (about GBP230)
Fox float 80 RL set to 70mm travel - perfect for this bike : $225 (about GBP130)
Black King headset: $80 (about GBP50)
I might be convinced to sell it as is, with the following:
- XTR M900 cranks 175mm , fr and rr derailleurs
- XT 8spd trigger shifters, 11-32 cassette, chain, BB
- XTR M985 trail brakes
- Ritchey classic 130mm stem and 27.2mm post
- Sunline flat bar 690mm
- XTR centrelock m960 36h hubs and Velocity Cliffhanger rims (brake surface has never been used) - could be Vbrake or disc (as it is now)
- Maxxis ADvantage tires (2.1")
(200km max on wheels and built by the best in the city)
OR we could tone things down by switching out a few things:
- Avid BB7 ROAD callipers with Ritchey Logic Cantilever Levers (great combination)
- Ritchey Force Directional 140mm ahead stem and matching Nitto post
- Surly Torsion bar (620mm)
All parts run perfectly and the bike shifts like a Swiss clock. I will be keeping the WTB saddle, but can replace with a San Marco Regal ti in equal condition.
I was planning on just dropping all of the parts from this bike onto my new frame, but if the idea of parting this out seems easy enough, I would simply unload all this sexy stuff and buy a new SLX group - I don't really care.
I would want about $1400 (about GBP800) for the entire bike. Make reasonable offers on parts and I may go that route as well.
I am very attached to the bike, so my prices are firmish - I won't give my baby away!
