Freehub body replacement

Dirt Disciple
Hi hoping someone could help me finding a replacement freehub body for the rear wheel from a 1996 Marin Stinson. The problem being that there is so much free play in its bearings that the cassette wobbles around enough to cause the chain to skip.

Are there any options for replacing this freehub or do I need to get the tools to strip it and rebuild with new bearings?

It's a 7 speed hyperglide freehub that screws straight into the wheel hub, there is no separate centre bolt or splines on the hub for it to slot into:

I think you’ll need a new one. From memory they’re difficult to get inside. I once had one that was rough so tried to get grease into it but gave up and bought one.

Is that the silent clutch ones? Don't think it is as they're longer.

Picture of the hub and any model numbers if it has one as the hub is not original to the bike.

So some cheap none shimano hub so look on ebay.

Re:

Thanks for all the replies!

Yes, it's the original Marin "Rock Star" hub. Marin Rock Star is engraved on the centre hub,

The freehub body only says "King Kong 5" on the dust seal as far as I can see.

Re:

Being a 1996 Marin Stinson changes things for a 1994 Marin bike...

Still ebay has some that look similar, just check dimensions and hope it fits.

Either a search for
Freehub body
Or
Joytech freehub body

Re:

Ha, thought I recognised it.

A direct replacement will be tough to find. The rockstar hubs were a limited issue,

Probably easier to replace the whole hub. I've not ever seen a spare freehub for them.

Or maybe a new rear wheel. Less faff and teueing up. Unless you are bored.

Re:

Thanks everyone.

LBS does wheel builds for £30.

I'll look for a replacement hub on ebay or pick up a hub from some old wheels on FB marketplace.

Getting new wheels would mean getting a full set. Can't be riding around on different rims front and rear!

Re:

Absolutely need matching rims.

Pick up a nice M737 hub, shouldn't be too much and will last ages.
(or the STX equivalent).
