Attention grabber
First off its a 20 1/2" C-C and the top tube is 22"ish
While out at the wheelbuilders i came across a Galaxy Tour(2001/2 :? ) out at their bin. Just the frame&forks and the headset/stem both of which looked ok. Had 531 on the forks
After some horrible to watch begging i convinced them i should take it and there was the alleged promise of a box of biccy's or something.
Ive never come across this model of galaxy before but have always wanted a super galaxy so was still pretty chuffed with my new freebie
It was somebodys commuter bike and the'd swopped all the parts onto a new frame. Judging by the condition i doubt any of those parts were that usable . DISGUSTING :x Some people ,just dont look after their bike.
Anyway. I struggled to carry the frame, my overstuffed bag and the wheel id had trued all the way home.
The frame is fine. its as far as im aware 531 .The lower underside bottle bosses and around that area are heavily bubbled, indicating serious rust. The other tubes are all ok. Theres another bit of bubbling on the seat tube about 7 inches down but its minor and i dont think a problem if you want to strip it. The up tube is the worst.
The stem was seized in so i just cut it off leaving a few inches protruding. Once cut the forks came off as per but left the stub quill seized inside so i used the blowlamp on that stub till rather warm, bit of spray oil then more heat to vapourize that further into the corrosion then clamped it in the big vice and twisted it till it came free Always nice to sort these things
Further issues with the fork are one of the pivots was loose in its mountings and had the innards of a canti seized on
I never want to meet its previous owner
Trusty dremel sliced down opposite sides of the canti sleeve, then 'cracked' off
Its off but the pivot itself is loose and as far as i can see would need a bit of weld popped behind it. Or removed and another fitted or bolted in :?
Frame is fine, rust bubbling on up tube bad but i dont think fatal.
Fork is also fine, but has a shoogly pivot.
The pic makes it look worse than it is. and i havent done much to clean it other than remove the years of grime so that im not covered every time it touch it. It is still very dirty as you can see, most of the rust on the dropouts and other places are just minor surface a bit of steel wool and reoiled would easily sort
If the rust of the up tube proves to be non fatal which i think is the case its a very nice frame. Make an excellent commuter for those prepared to look after it
Typically way too small for me but this seems my fate with bicycles
Pick up only, which is Glasgow. Sorry i dont have a box spare and im not making one.
