Early - Mid 90's Dawes Giro Comp 300

RoadieRod

Retro Newbie
Hi folks, last year I picked up a Dawes Giro Comp 300 built I guess around about the mid 90's but virtually unused and in mint condition. For 40 quid, a real bargain! Only problem is that because it's hardly been used, nothing has been opened up and re-greased etc. The free wheel hub has now been stripped down, re-greased and put back together and is very smooth again. Issue I'm having now is that when putting pressure on when peddling there is a sort of creaking, crunching noise. I've taken the crank arms off and cleaned them etc which helped a wee bit but the noise is still there. I suspect it may be the bottom bracket bearings needing greased. Does anyone else reckon thats a possibility or unlikely. Another problem i have is i cant get in to see if its a sealed unit or not. I can't get the lock ring off though to get the bracket out, it has several notches out round its perimeter but they are curved and not that deep so I don't know what tool to use..........any thoughts?! Many thanks.

Sounds like a FAG / SKF bottom bracket, Dawes certainly used them around this time - does it have black plastic cups with 6 half-moon sort of dimples in the edge? They are brilliant BBs, mine are still going after 20 years. I bet the creaking is the pedals. Try swapping them.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply. yeah that definitely sounds like the very fellow. I changed the pedals to the clipless ones from my other roadie a wee while ago, maybe worth giving it a go.

Out of interest, how do you get these rings off? Is the BB a sealed unit when you get in about it?
