Early 90s S Works Stumpjumper

Hey fellas, I recently bought a fairly clean looking S Works from a guy down south and I can't find a ton of info on it.

It's been a long time coming until I found the right frame for a high end period correct build and I think this one will go XT M735, or possibly M900 if I can track everything down without spending a fortune.

Seller thinks it's a 92 but the only pics I could find of the same frame were from a couple year old ad that stated it was a 91.
It's Tange Prestige and I believe made in Japan. Original paint, components in the picture are not original. I only bought the frame, fork, headset and got the Suntour XC Pro Grease Guard bottom bracket thrown in because the seller didn't have the correct spanner to remove it. Bonus!

I'm mainly curious about the year but would love any additional info like is it one of the first steel s works, was it a relatively small production run, ect. I know there are more than a couple Stumpjumper gurus around here :D

Thanks for any info!

Cory

Here's a link to the pics in my photobucket, it's the 5 pictures of the dark green frame. http://s1250.photobucket.com/user/dubya ... sort=3&o=2

Did you take a look in the catalogues? (Here on the retrobike "Archive and Gallery" there should be something?)

I have. Unless I missed it there's nothing about S Works, or a S Works specific catalog, in the 1991 or 1992 books.

I'm 99% sure it's a 91 model after receiving it today.

My first guess was 93. I was under the impression, they began making/selling sworks stuff from 92 onwards...
But then again, that could be my false assumption.
Google seems full of pictures of 1991 sworks steel frames...

Awesome, that's one of the main things I was wondering. I thought it may be the first year steel s works, thanks for confirming!

Re:

I received the frame & fork late last week and built it up today. I still need to pick up a chain and a couple more cables but for now it's built up with

-MT62 Deore II pedals, thumbie shifters, front mech and hubs (laced to Specialized GX23 rims)
-M730 XT cranks with SG rings
-M737 XT rear mech
-M739 XT brake levers and calipers
-BB-UN51 bottom bracket
-HG70 cassette
-Ritchey Force 120mm stem and aluminum Specialized bars
-26.4 Strong seatpost and my favorite saddle (~2000 Specialized BG)

I'm going to swap out all the MT62 bits with M732 front mech, hubs and thumbies and M735 pedals as budget allows as well as new 26" skinwall knobbies if i can ever find a pair. It's nothing fancy but should be a sweet rider.
