does anyone make 9 speed thumbshifters

You could get an 8 speed Suntour XC shifter, then take it apart and replace the indexing plate with one with holes in the correct 9 speed positions for whichever rear mech it is for. As an 8 speed will travel the same overall distance from top too bottom.

It would mean creating your own plate though.

It's also a way to freshen up older one's and neaten the holes up.

Not so AFAIK. SunTour 8-speed cassettes are wider than Shimano as they have some cogs spaced at 5.0mm, whereas Shimano are all 4.8mm.

At any rate...the Thumbies adaptors from Paul work great, and its good news that they are making Sram versions.

I'm sure I read somewhere that SunTour thumbshifter mounts would attach to Shimano bar-end shifters. Has anyone ever tried it or know if it does work?

re thumbshifters

thanks everyone for your help.i'm afraid that my internet credit allowance is very low 70mb.will not be able to get more credit until next wednesday.(ah the joys of p.a.y.g broadband) :)

You'd think as Paul make mechs and mounts for thumbies, that they should make a pair of 9 speed thumbies
Not exactly technical,so it wouldnt be that hard

You could also ask yourself why they do not make the front and rear deraileur anymore?

Machines have come a long way in 15 years I guess, would it be so diffcult to just press a buton and create 100 purple anodized Paul rear mechs? I bet he would be able to sell them all for 100 bucks each.

And since it's a ball that pushes into a hole in a plate and you're making the plate there is more than enough room put all 9 holes in.*

Also Suntour made Plug & Play Shimano spacing equipment in their latter years (ignoring the modern SR Suntour we have now), but that is beside the point.

* not tried it but theoretically possible, maybe i'll have to do it just for fun now. (here hopes the ball bearing is not to big to cause overlap ;))
