do people begrudge other people earning a living these days?

Take a deep breath and don't bite. If he questions the decision, close the response - repeat it again if needed. Providing more reasons, if they are perfectly genuine, adds fuel to the fire.

Failing that, get your email spam filters to move mail automatically to trash and his callerID to bar.

Re:

Jon, you are quickly becoming the angriest person I know!
You've taken the title from Angry Tim, and I can't see him getting it back in a hurry.
What's changed mate? Is it riding that ridiculous bike with the big tyres?

Re:

It's a long time since I've worked in a bike shop, but my regular "favourite" conversation was along these lines:

C: <question>
M: <answer>
C: <argues with answer>

If you already know the answer, why are you coming in here asking me ??

Re:

I think the wider population in general are just becoming more self interested, opinionated, and less pleasant as all round.... apart from Al, he's reet lovely

Re:

My tuppence worth....

A mate has a bike shop, it's hugely popular and he's booked out for weeks at a time for repairs, but last time I was in there he was saying he couldn't get over the attitude of some customers. Worst offenders in his eyes? Engineers.

I was at my parents when my Dad was trying to fix a hideous BSO up for my nephew's best friend, I said to him as we shook our heads at the general crapness of the way it was set up, 'isn't his father capable of fixing this up for him?' (no brakes, loose headset, rear puncture, etc) Dad said, you'd think so, he's is an engineer....

People are horrible generally speaking, nowadays. Arrogant, selfish, egotistical and obsessed with material possession. Happily pay £3.50 upwards for a pint, £7 for a packet of fags, £3 something for a coffee, etc, as others have said. But pay for a quality repair? Why should they, they could do it themselves after all, if only they had the right tools, time, skill set....

Hasn't changed since I worked in a bike shop in the 70's :)

I get engineers and the like trying to tell me my job (I use a lot of CAD/CAM titanium and Zirconia), fair enough, I just politely ask them if they would like to arrange to do the work themselves. No takers so far :)

Re:

the worst thing is yesterday this same numpty asked about our shop rides, "mountain bike monday" is from the shop at 6.30pm every monday and we go out out with customers for anywhere between 12 and 20 miles depending on the group and their fitness, he says he'll come out and join us next week, i told the shop owner who is supposed to run the rides but hasn't been out on one for about a month that if he turns up to ride i will make an excuse and leave, i have to put up with his idiocy in my paid time but not in my afterwork private time.

regards NZ, Burkes Cycles NZ have been in contact, they want me back, offered more money, it's financially worth it, get another summer, keep my fitness up, hmm struggling to see a downside to be honest. thinking of opening up on my own when i return in spring, sick of making money for other people and having the choice to say "i'm sorry but i don't want to work on that" or "i'm sorry but you're being rude, i don't want you as my customer, please leave the shop" does seem like a nice option.

@makster, i'm not angry as such, just disappointed with the public attitude that retail staff etc have to put up with, i don't mind people not being able to afford things, i don't mind people buying mail order, there's just no need to be an arse about it, it's not our fault.

Tell him next time he comes in , Say to him directly Not to bother and guide him back to hence he came.
Sure he'll bitch and moan on the way to the door and no doubt blog it out, though anyone on his blog/ facebook/ twitter etc will know what to expect and to ignore as per usual.

Best off without. Fella like that could easily sour your entire day.
If he pushes for a reason tell him because I personally think youre a complete cock ,now f**k off and bother someone else.
