On my newer 27 speed bike with XT front and rear mechs and rapidfire shifters, I could never get it set up so that the front derailleur cage wouldn't rub on the chain. In the end I gave up and fitted a friction thumb shifter that I could "trim": http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/sunrace-thumbshifter-left-hand-prod23293/, it's really cheap and nasty looking, but works perfectly and is lighter than the XT rapidfire it replaced.

run them as friction shifters and they work on any amout of cogs

I have 8 speed friction on my road bike. Its a bit tricky to shift accurately, but is loads more reliable I guess.

How do you lot fair running 8 speed+ in friction mode for MTB's?

I've got 8 speed DNP Epoch thumbshifters, designed for the correct 4.8mm cassette spacing. About £10 off eBay ~8 years ago. You're unlikely to find a new set now though!

Sure the plastics and clamp look a bit cheap but they work every bit as well as Deore's
