A big question I know, but I would value opinions, I think Carl Jung said that to live a happier life we should all think that we are going to always live another 300 years.

Sounds good to me but as I get older it seems more difficult to 'trick' my mind into trying to believe such techniques. I think it's a good idea after all life is for the living and while we are alive we should just concentrate on ......well being alive.

If there is any existence when we are dead, then i'm sure the same should apply ' death is for the dead' so only the dead should contemplate it IF they have a consciousness to do so.

I had my first death realization at 7 years old...........

Should we think about our own demise ? and is it natural to do so ? and if so how should we think about it in a non-religious way OR should we clutch onto such beliefs as a comfort blanket to ease the thought of it all. After all religions are as old as the human race, we must have invented it for some useful purpose originally, not just to control others ?

I only spend time contemplating such things at 8.20am on a Monday morning when checking into RB.co.uk

Seriously tho, spend less time thinking and worrying about the inevitable, and enjoy the moment.

I think it OS fairly normal to think about death but if it is taking over your thoughts then perhaps there are things you might be better off chatting to someone qualified.

My personal feeling is that we can't do anything to avoid the inevitable do live life without fear and the end will come when it comes. Worrying about it won't change a thing.

And on religion, I think the only reason it is there is to control. I can understand paganism and as far as I can tell all popular religions hark back to pagan beliefs. There is a fantastic film online called zeitgeist the movie. The first section explains how similar religious beliefs are and how they all started as pagan sun worship. Very interesting.

I'd like to reply to that with a quote from The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

"The human brain is an amazing computer. Its raw clock speed is 20 billion calculations per second. Its storage is functionally infinite.
But it's flawed. There's nowhere to download it when you die.
Your Bible solves this problem by introducing a concept of Heaven."

If earth were the center of the galaxy, I might have believed in a God. However it's just a small planet turning around a small star in a small system.
I find it hard to believe that a God would have created the entire universe just to put a few billion people on one of the many planets in there. It seems like an awful waste of space.

I don't believe in reincarnation either. If there were such a thing, surely we wouldn't have to start over from scratch whenever we started a new life.
Besides, for reincarnation the number of people on earth would need to be constant. Also, there are at least a dozen people who claim to be a reincarnation of any given historical figure.

And now the grim bit :
All this leads me to believe that it all ends when we die. No heaven, no hell, no next life.
It doesn't matter what you've done or how much wealth you've amassed. It's the only part of life where all humans are equal.
So what to do? Enjoy every day and live life the way you want to.
If you want to see all corners of the world, go for it.
If you want to protest against the government, overthrow it and build a new, better world for the future generations, just do it.

The end is inevitable, so enjoy the part between your birth and death. It won't make a blind bit of difference for you in the end, but at least you had fun.

Just my 2 cents

I like the replies so far, a respectful thank you.

I remember someone saying to me once think ''that 150 years ago the entire population who where living on this planet are all dead'', ''yes Dave there all dead , all dead Dave, yes Dave their all dead ....Dave....''...(sorry for the Red Dwarf type thing)..............it certainly puts things into perspective that every 150 ish years everyone that lived then are all dead, a whole planet population.

Yes people are born all the time, and that is the circle of life Zimba !
But that just makes me feel like frogs spawn..........

Good to be amongst big thinkers.

Not something specifically i have dwelled upon but id like to think that i dont fear death (or should that be worry about death?).

Sometimes i like to muse things such as this but often put it down to incomprehensible for one man alone.

Horton hears a who, what if were all like that? A world within a world. Who knows, like i said, bigger thoughts than any one person.

I think even in a whole lifetime there is never full understanding.

So just live it. We know what the other choice is. Life is a very odd thing isnt it.
